It's for extreme close-ups. Yes and no... Maybe you need it. I haven't used mine yet.

:idea:
1. Wide-angle-macro: It can also be the basis for an attachment of an Ultra-Wide(angle)-Lens (UWL), e.g. at most later Nizos, Canons.
2. Macro from different focal lenght's: no UWL attachable, e.g. at most newer Bauers.
Also extra close-up-lenses can replace/outperform the macro mode to some degree at non-macro-lenses.
Does someone know if a telephoto-lens requires a macro mode?

... dont see any reason why you should not go for a decent camera with macro mode (no "16:9 expert" ;).
