NEW! A music video from Finland!

Post by Lauri Aalto »

Hello!

My first post to this forum so I'll keep it short.
First S8 video I've ever made.
Shot with Canon 1014XL-S.

http://www.puisto.org/kaita/movies/BKOY ... eelin.mpg

I'll add a link to a longer description about the project later, meanwhile enjoy the video!

That's beautiful, beautiful work. The stuff in the hallway bunker thing was especially cool. Did you put a slight black vignette on the hallway shots in After Effects?

You have to stop this immediately :D

If the DV tape gurus see this stuff there is a real danger that they go insane and commit a ferro metal oxide suicide down the tape sallad drain.

Incredibly impressive.

And why would we do that?

It doesn't matter *what* you shoot it on,it matters *how* you shoot it...

BecaZ - wrong.

40 year old $250 gear yelding better imagery than most modern DV gear AND because of the *Schmeisser effect* enforcing superior creativity.

Working with data storage systems is analog to virginity.
DV once touched creativity forever lost ;-)
"Forever liveth only the taped" (lost) - Now who wrote that?
There is no way back :-) or is it?

There is more commitement to shuffeling film.
Never tried that? You should.

http://www.iriakhem.com ?

One hour on a 1995 Adobe Premiere 4.0 for the MAC + a couple of plugs.

That´s´all it takeZ.

This was shot on a Sony TRV 30.After Effects was used to take OUT excess video grain(noise) instead of adding it!

Try to blow it up to any real format - then you will see what it is worth. 8)

It's still in development..
The trailer was just a dry run for the proposed film..

This next trailer was not shot very well......

..proving once again that the "film look" alone will not save your life..

Booster,

it's hard to know if you are serious or not. I'm from a video background myself and understand the asthetic differences between video and film all too well. I've become quite an accomplished colorist over the years and have used a plug-in called Magic Bullet in After Effects to strip the 30fps down to 24fps with very good results. It really gets rid of that clinical feel inherent in video and gives a feeling of the warmth and organic quality of film.

Nothing beats film, of course, and I am about to embark into the world of Super 8mm just so I can shoot film (can't afford anything grander).

I appreciate that both formats (video and film) are very different but what it comes down to is a technology. Someone who makes a film using a video camera (maybe because of budget constraints or just convenience) does not make that person any less of a filmmaker. The tool itself does not hamper imagination. It comes down to a vision and a good story with good performance. A great looking film still needs good lighting, etc. regardless of its format. That's what makes a film, not a cartridge or a reel.

Having said that, I am beside myself with excitement to actually shoot something on film!!

Anyway, I'm not trying to preach but it's not fair to slam people's artistic talents because of their choice of tools.

That's all.

Steven
