Canon zoom 518 super 8 problem please help

Hello film people, I was wondering if any of you knew about a problem I’ve been having with my camera. It seems that every time I put in the cell batteries for the light meter, it works fine but as soon as I add in the AA batteries for the film motor the light meter stops working but when the batteries are removed it starts working again. I also discovered that even if the spring in the AA battery compartment is pressed with a non electronic object like a pen the light the light meter stops. I’m very confused as I know the cell batteries power the entire exposure system. Thanks in advance, Lachlan.
