Canon 518 zoom super 8 camera battery issue

I recently purchased a canon zoom 518 and 3 AA Batteries and 2 wein cell 1.35 v zinc air batteries that are said to replace px 25 type batteries (px 25 are listed as acceptable batteries on the manual) for the camera. When I inserted the batteries I discovered something unusual: it seems that when the wein cell batteries are in on their own the light meter works perfectly but as soon as I put the AA batteries in, the light meter stops working. I am confused and worried by this as I know the cell batteries power the exposure system. I was wondering if anyone knew if it’s a problem with the camera, the batteries or something else entirely.
