8mm survey

Post by Salla »

Hello 8mm enthusiasts!

I´m preparing my Ph.D.thesis at the University of Turku, Finland. My aim is to study how to use cine films as a source in research.

I have made a survey where I wish to find out facts about shooting 8mm films and having it as a hobby. What´s the situation now and what has it been before?

You can find the survey here:

http://puisto.org/kaita/kysely.shtml

Have a look at it, please and answer the questions!
And if you know other cine film amateurs, young or old, please advertise this survey.

With best wishes

This link should be of interest of anyone attempting to preserve family histories:

I have stacks of expensive DVD-RAM'd video in the safe deposit box. None of it came through as well as my father in law's fifty year old Kodachromes.

Hello again!

Thank you all for answering the questions. I´ve already got pretty many answers. I´ll make a summary of all them and tell about it in this forum too, perhaps in November. Thanks also for the good tips and links you have sent.

As I already mentioned, I´ve just started my Ph.D. thesis at the University of Turku, Finland. I´m interested in everyday life and I´d like to find out what amateur films tell about it.

Among other material, I´ll show the results of this survey at the University in October or November.

The survey has no deadline so it's possible to take part in it later on. Hope I´ll hear of you!

Yes, I am but not before I´ve learned enough of it. I ´ll concentrate not so much on technical part but on contents of these films but of course both parts are there.

I´ll also act as a sort of advertiser telling people about the possibilities that films offer for schools, universities, museums, archives etc. For example, there are museums and archives in Finland, where they have about a million photos but only twenty or thirty amateur films (or films at all). So there´s much to do on this area!

Terve Salla!

Just like to say that the first Super 8 film I shot abroad was in Finland!!! There wasn't a space for that in the questionaire....

Good luck with the survey!!

I have received over 50 answers now! (One result so far: all from men :!:). Thank you for all of them. There are also veteran amateurs, who are usually difficult to reach via internet.

Because there can't be too many answers in this kind of survey, could you suggest some other forums where to advertise this survey. Do you know for example some other 8mm or photo forums? There seems to be many photo amateurs who have also filmed 8mm.

With grateful wishes,

Salla

http://www.theiac.org.uk/ there is a forum, too.

http://www.cornwall-net.co.uk/ace/index.htm a small add here would reach those not on the web.

If you explore the IAC site you will find many cine clubs in the UK.
