Bell & Howell 2146 XL viewfinder repair

Post by ncollingwood »

Hey there.

Anyone have any experience with this or similar Super 8 cameras? I got it off eBay for cheap and it works great EXCEPT that I believe the mirror that reflects the prism light into the viewfinder came loose in shipping and is tumbling around in the camera. I cannot figure out how to open the camera as there's just a couple of screws at the bottom and they didn't give me any more access really. I'd really love to fix it as it automatically exposes all the way up to 500T with a f1.2 lens and it's small so great for traveling. And apparently not very common sadly.

Sorry this post took a couple weeks to get approved so I got bold and fixed it in the meantime.

Basically, I found a few hidden screws under some fake leather stickers near the lens as well as one under the panel where the cartridge sits that managed to let the side detach. Found the mirror bouncing around. Old glue must've detached. Reattached it with some super glue, put everything back, and bam! Working viewfinder and camera. Still waiting on the test roll I shot to get back to me so we'll see if it still focuses alright. Was kinda fun tinkering with the innards but regluing a mirror is probably as bold as I'll get. Although I do have a Nizo 148 Macro with a stuck aperture.... ha.
