film developing effects?

Post by milesandjules »

Hi guys
We are experimenting with filming a white/grey wall as a grain element to key over clean footage to grunge it up and make it look more archival.
We are using 16mm colour neg and processing in black and white in a lomo tank…we do have c41 to if that can create cool effects. here are some stills from found super8 films that look cool…...

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to create similar cool film looks? I've seen footage that looks like the image is shattered glass. How could we recreate that?

Is there any household chemicals that will do weird stuff to film?

Thanks for any help guys.

That grunge looks great all on it 's own. Seems a shame to pollute it with clean footage. :)

Hi Miles , There's CGI , And then there's Acid your need 100% Sulphuric Acid hard to get ! drop film in a Acid bath for 1 sec , Then take out and put film in a water tray, Never done it as could not find 100% acid , also do it out side with the right stuff on , ' and do not touch film with your hands . As too much Acid is not good for your health .
Then there from hot to cold in development only with some film's .

like it!

So would I do the acid before or after processing?

Im thinking maybe these effects were created by just soaking normal processed film back into water for different lengths of time.. ..Acid sounds more fun. :D

I've seen old non-kodachrome slides with what could be considered a "breaking glass" look or cracking; sometimes like a spiderweb look. Usually from age and mishandling.

It can get kind of Sun RA out there ! :) Ok step 1 . process film as you would , when you are done washing the film . Then drop the film in a acid bath 100% .
1 sec then pull out. 2. Then drop film in to ice water , wear the right gear and eye wear .

Other way is when processing film what is called Reticulation , This is hit and miss .
Thats where a temperature changed from hot to cold take's place after dev , like you put film in ice water or freezer for some time before washing .

or soak in a sodium carbonate .

1. 100% Acid ,will give you that look you want the broken /cracked glass look . please be careful and do it safe .
2, Household bleach for veiling , this is just 100% house bleach and mask parts you want to keep then wash in water works really quick . ;)

if you need more help PM me , will dig out notes .
