First time Bolex user looking for awnsers

Post by Luuk »

Hello everyone, I came across a Bolex Paillard H16 Reflex which I'd like to use to shoot some film in the near future. I've done some research and found out how the camera works, but I still have some unawnsered questions. Since im a student and the film isn't that cheap I'd like to go in fully prepared to minimize the chance of errors. I hope you guys can enlighten me. I have been shooting a lot of film photography the last year, so I have knowledge about photographic film. The set I currently have consists of;

Bolex Paillard H16 Reflex
Yvar 75mm 2.8
Switar 25mm 1.4 H16 RX
Switar 16mm 1.8 H16 RX
Berthiot Pan-Cinor 17.5-70mm 2.4 + "Viewing scope" (do not know the proper name for that)
16-25mm viewfinder

Question concerning the Switar lenses;

1. I imagine I need to use the 16-25 rangefinder with those, but how about focussing? Is the only way zonefocussing or could I focus in another way?
And since I have the Pan-Cinor 17.5-70mm, should I even use these?

Questions concerning the Berthiot Pan-Cinor lens:
2. It seems to me it would be preferably to use this lens, since I dont have to switch between the 3 and it has the viewing scope with it. Only the problem is that I cannot get this to fit correctly on the Bolex. The threads for the viewing scope don't line up in a 90 degree angle with the body (see image below), so the image is al tilted. Does anyone have an idea how I could fix this?

3. Also, the focus ring of this lens isn't what you call smooth, you need some power to turn it, is there a simple yet safe way to loosen this up a bit?

4. And the last thing about this lens, I opened up the back of the lens and saw a black spot inside the lens. It looks perfectly round so I imagine its supposed to be there? Could someone tell me what it is?

Question about metering;
5. I've been using a Gossen Lunasix 3 light meter for my photography, is metering the light for filming the same? Im curious about the "CINE" values on the meter and also what shutter speed I should set when shooting on 24fps.

I hope you guys are willing/can help me out, im really enthusiastic about shooting with this camera, just don't know enough about it yet. Any awnsers/tips about filming are highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Luuk
