What's the current state of 35mm processing & telecine?

Post by hirudin »

Hi all,

I'm considering the purchase of a 35mm camera, but the decision is quite dependent on labs that can process 35mm b/w and colour neg at a reasonable cost... and then there's scanning. Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions on reliable, cheap labs? Lowest price I've found is 19c per ft, which amounts to $190 for 11mins of film... weren't there some labs that were still 0.12c per ft?

Thanks!!

I believe that Fotokem is the only full service 35mm lab left in L.A., which should give you a good idea about the current state of 35mm. Beyond that Colorlab in Maryland gets some good reviews for being indie friendly.

The labs used to offer cheap processing because they made a killing on the telecine. But now the few remaining labs aren't in much of a position to do that anymore. The 12 cent a foot labs are out of business!

There are still plenty of 35mm processing labs out there:

CINEFILM - Atlanta
Continental Film Lab - Miami and New Orleans
Filmworkers Club - Dallas
COLORLAB - Maryland and NYC
VideoFilmSolutions - Rockville, MD
TECHNICOLOR-NYC
CINELAB-Boston/New Bedford
NIAGRA Custom Lab- Toronto
THE CINEMA LAB - Edgewood, Colorado
SPECTRA FILM & VIDEO - Los Angeles
FOTOKEM - Los Angeles

Video Film Solutions has the best price for processing on the East Coast at $00.14 per foot. Shop around and see what the prices are in your area.
