A new play honoring the death of analog film

Post by VulGerrity »

Hey everyone, I'm trying to raise awareness and gain support for my new project, a multimedia live performance called "Memorial Service to Follow." It's something I think you all would find interesting. It's about a filmmaker, who while saying goodbye to his art form, realizes he's still mourning the death of his father. I know that film is not dead, but with rising costs it's become increasingly difficult for young independent filmmakers to shoot on film. This play hopes to show off, and raise awareness for the beauty and viability of film as a capture and presentation medium.

Through the staging of a wake and funeral for the dying use of film in the motion picture industry, we will experience the life and death of my father on stage. The production will be accompanied by live 16mm film and video projections to further delve into the life of my father, James Michael Gerrity, a Vietnam War combat veteran (known as James in the Army but better known as “Mike” to friends and family). As a result of the war, Mike struggled with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and manic depression for the rest of his life. Sadly Mike passed away in September 2009 due to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. The piece will stand as a memorial, not just to soldiers, other service members, and film, but to all things lost.

I will play the role of the filmmaker. For the duration of the play I will remain on stage creating the life of my father and trying to connect to a part of him that I never knew. I will be sharing my grieving process for all to see.

You can find more information about the project on the Kickstarter page - http://kck.st/15xJWq0 Even if you can't make a donation, it would really mean a lot to me if you helped to get the word out.
