Super 8 cartridge pressure pad weight

Post by erkanumut »

Hi Folks,

I am wondering what is the Super 8 cartridge pressure pad weight (in grams). Do you have any info regarding those rare figures?

Also, may the polyester based new stocks cause problems in Super 8 cameras? Is any adjustment necessary for the pressure pad weight for thinner polyester film?

Thank you very much for any info!

Quite surprisingly polyester film works better in many super-8 cameras than normal film. So no problems, on the contrary -- some cameras which have had problems with acetat film might work with polyester because it's lighter.

The marginal difference in thickness does not lead to a different pressure from the plate. The margins in production of the cartrdige parts are likely of more significance.

Hi,
  • The pressure pad differs at least between Kodak, Agfa, GK and the reloadable "Kaccema". There might have been more manufacturers and there might have been differences between 15m-silent, 15m-sound and 60m-sound as well. So if you really want to know anything, you should specify the cart.
  • I don't understand why the weight is of essence. Do you mean "pressure"?
  • There have been polyester-based film-stocks in Super8-carts before, e.g. Kodak's "MFX"-film, some film-stocks by ferrania/3m, ... . None of them is known to have special carts or to cause problems in S8-cameras.
  • If your question is related to the Agfa-Gevaert Aviphot Chrome 200, then you should keep in mind that this film is nearly as thick as acetate-based film-stocks, e.g. the K40. Hence there's only 15.9m film in Wittner's "Wittner: CHROME 200D" (while the Wittner's version of the K40 contained 15.7m of film).

Thank you Jörg.
Yes, I mean the pressure.
I have got some answers that show about 1,5 Newton or 150 grams.
