Buellar... Buellar... Buellar (Retro 8 Enterprises)

Post by Mana »

Anyone try to contact Retro 8 in Tokyo? I have 2 Fujichrome Single 8 that I want to send them to process, but no response to email! I shot these last two rolls in Japan, but it was New Years while I was in Tokyo so they were closed. Both of these have processing included. Cheers!

Just try and try. Tak is too busy and only repetitive mailers gets attention :(
Some business model :)

Or send them with a letter. The processing is done with the help of others.
I used to send with Euro 10 in the envelope. I doubt that is still enough.

I e-mailed them once and never got a reply. I Guess they are not big on the formalities of business.

Well sure enough, as soon as the films were processed Tak emailed me! After payment it took less than a week to arrive. All in all it took about 2 1/2 weeks time. Colors of R25 are amazing! Gonna miss that film!

Well, that is good news. As fast as any other lab :)

So we can keep using the ZC1000 and Marine camera.
I am quite lucky to have a stock for a few years.

How much does it cost these days? Did you use Paypal?

Yep! Great fast service! Processing was 2500 Yen, shipping standard was 240 yen for 2 films. Wish I had more R25! I will be back in Japan this Summer and will visit them. Hopefully they will have some kind of stock. Last time there was no Velvia in any format. Was really hoping to pick up some 16mm Velvia!

Is this Yen 2500 for two films? It would be Euro 20 for one otherwise.
Kind regards,

Well, there's "busy" and then there's "I don't have to care about responding promptly because I'm the only person in the world who sells and processes this niche item, so you'll wait or ... 'NO SINGLE 8 FOR YOU!' " . I'd like to try shooting some Single-8 , but this gives me pause ...

I can't tell from the website what Single-8 film stock he actually sells, if any is still available. Am I wrong or does the last time the English-language version of the website was updated seems to have been in 2006 (?) . Again, I understand being "busy" , but I also know how long it takes to go in and update a website and it's not that much effort to update it. C'mon ...

http://film.club.ne.jp/english/eng_cinevia.html

At that time he listed Cinevia 50D ("Velvia 50") for sale , with announcements of "coming in Autumn" (which autumn ? 2006 ?) of Cinevia T64 Pro ( Fujichrome T64 Professional) , Cinevia/Astia 100F ( Fujichrome Astia 100F) , and Cinevia/Provia 400X (Fujichrome Provia 400X) . Really ?

Also listed is black & white stock "Retro X" (which is apparently ORWO b & w stock). Has anyone tried the "Retro X" B & W stock with a Single-8 camera ? How's it run through the camera ?

Anyone else care to report on recent experience buying film with processing from Retro8 Enterprises ?

Incidentally, I'm sorry to see that there is now absolutely no way to access the old http://schmalfilm-online.de/ site , not even by using the Internet Wayback Machine . All the archived pages from http://schmalfilm-online.de/ have been removed and it automatically defaults to the new domain name owner zoom-magazin.de .

The retro 8 website has been updated considerably. In Japanese and in English. Unfortunately
the original Fuji film seems to have run out. Now there is only their own production. Somebody else selling?
Or modding these ZC-1000's :) The problem is of course that the door must closed to use the viewfinder.
Reportably one ZC-1000 was converted in the past to use 400ft rolls. Driven by the external torque axis.
Where did that one go.

The mail handling is poor and hardly business style. Apparently all english eamil is handled by Tak himself. Or the mail is so intensives that waiting messages drift off quick. Clearly this scares a lot of customers.

Member Mana sent his films just recently and got them back fairly quick.
So all is working in the lab and the invoicing can be done by others too.

It is a bit lame the Schmalfilm was taken off line so soon. It is a business manner of handling things. So is the applying of no-cache to the pages long before it went out. Too bad as numerous article had their root in this forum or came from other public sources. Now you need to scavenge for printed issue's.. Is the book still there? Or were these sent to the shredder too?
Kind regards,

André
