Guns n Roses and Super 8?

Post by Patrick »

Two music videos by hard rock band Guns n Roses, Paradise City and Sweet Child Of Mine, both feature grainy black and white footage. And I was wondering if anyone knew if that was Super 8 Tri-X? Ive searched on google but couldn't find any results to confirm this.

Further more, would anyone have any examples of Tri-X online that has been pushed a stop or two? I'm very interested in the amount of grain that one can get by pushing it considerably. All the Tri-X clips Ive seen on youtube and vimeo have been exposed and developed normally.

I think you'll find that it was 16 - not sure what stock though - late '80s - probably neg?

I think this is some overexposed tri-x - but I could be wrong!

The B&W in Sweet Child of Mine is 16mm. You can see crew with Bolexes in many of the shots. Don't know for sure for Paradise City but I would suspect the same thing with it being a pro shoot.

Being a pro shoot doesn't necessarily mean that they will always stick to 16mm and 35mm. There are quite a number of music videos (which would be classified as 'pro shoots') that incorporate super 8 film into the footage. With Paradise City, there are some segments of black and white film that are quite fine grained and some segments of black and white film that are very grainy. Yes, the grainy footage could well be 16mm that was pushed a couple of stops but we don't really know.
