Lomo Still Film Scanner
They are running a kickstarter campaign for a simple device that captures film negative and slide film into your smart phone. I'm guessing that it uses an app that inverts the negative. It doesn't look all that great, but calls to my attention that there is an i-phone app now that can invert negative film and no NLE plug-in that does. Using the current basic NLE invert plug-in doesn't compensate for the orange mask and requires a lot of careful tweaking to almost get it right sometimes... The scanned negative examples from the phone app would be far easier to color correct in my NLE.

Re: Lomo Still Film Scanner
What is so special? I have seen something like that before at the photokine I suppose. These things already exist.
Everything one could come up with has already been thought of and tried.
Often with a 'working' app thing and plastic add-ons. Try a 3D viewer based on phone display.
The pledgers expect to get one once the amount is there?
But formally it is an investment to get things going.

I wouldn't call it special... It's pretty simple. It would be special if we could work with negative S8mm film in digital form as routinely, since that is all we will have in color now.

The INVERT option has been a part of Final Cut Pro since the 1st version. FCP X also has a NEGATIVE filter. Have you used the INVERT option in FCP? It takes 2 passes to get the correct negative image. Shoot a color chart and gray card at the start of the roll. Apply the INVERT function and the apply the color correction filter and add BLUE to Shadows, Mids and Highlights. That's it.Tscan wrote:. I'm using Vegas 10... There is an invert feature, but it seems to be designed for making a positive image into a negative one as an effect. When I invert a negative frame, it's still very blue and very very flat... no density at all.fastwind wrote:The INVERT option has been a part of Final Cut Pro since the 1st version. The software doesn't matter, only the operatinal procedures. Once the negative image is inverted to positive, START WITH BLACK LEVELS FIRST. This is where a COLOR CHART and GREY CARD really help out. If you have neither, use the closest reference in the frame/scene that you can. Once you have adjusted the black levels and the image starts looking the way it was on set, color correction become much easier.Tscan wrote: I'm using Vegas 10... I do agree, ther needs to be a SIMPLE-convert-color negative-movie-film-lug-in for NLE's.
Re: Lomo Still Film Scanner
Well here's an attempt from a random negative still i found on the internet... I worked the levels then color, not too bad.

Yawn! The price for that device is much too high! At half the price you can already get a "real" scanner instead of some plastic that gets mounted to your cell phone. Not to mention that you can build that "film holder" yourself for a few nickels:

BTW: If you've already got two apple-devices, you can simply use this app instead of getting that Lomo-thingy:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/film-sc ... 80780?mt=8
(Instead of using a second apple-device one could also use a back-lit slide-sorter.)
...and when you've got problems turning the negatives into positives, simply use this free plug-in for gimp (which is also free):

That's exactly what i'd like to find as a NLE plug-in... But I wouldn't know where to start or what to do with this code script. Is there anything out there in a packaged version that will run in an NLE?

Not that I know off.Tscan wrote:That's exactly what i'd like to find as a NLE plug-in... But I wouldn't know where to start or what to do with this code script. Is there anything out there in a packaged version that will run in an NLE?

In "Magix Video deluxe mx" one can invert the colours and then use the "adjust colours"-sliders. This will result in better images than your attempt, but it's still far from the GIMP-plugin. And when combining shots made with different cameras, you'll permanently have to adjust your settings.
(Of course one could convert the video into single images and then use GIMP's batch-mode to convert all images. Afterwards you'll only have to convert the images into a video again. However this would require a lot of disc-space and time.)
