Nalcom FTL cable release

Post by gaugefilm »

I managed to get my hands on a Nalcom Synchro Zoom FTL and am loving it. The only problem I've hit thus far is it's really difficult to use on my shoulder rig. My shoulder rig is a pretty cheap (but awesome) set up which combines an old heavy duty film camera shoulder pad with a new dslr support plate. It's proven to be very versatile over the years and I can use my Super 8's 16mm's and DSLR's on it easily with no messing. Just clip them on and go.

The Nalcom has presented somewhat of a challenge though. The placement of the shutter release on the side of the camera body is rather difficult to trigger whilst mounted on the shoulder support. I noticed there was a cable release but the socket is much larger than any canon, bauer or nizo release I have ever come across (or I would have plugged those in to see if they worked). I wondered if any one has any idea what socket it is and if I can purchase a modern cable release to use with it? I know the original nalcom release was quite capable with running lock, time lapse options and single frame. The idea would be to connect any usable cable release and tape it up to the handle of my shoulder support. Then I could simply trigger it from the handle which would circumvent the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

Best

It is (almost) regular 3,5mm jack same as on headphones etc. Hama or Kaiser in Germany may be still producing usable remote control. The thing is that the original Nalcom grip has middle part on it missing so it prevents triggering the shutter by accident when connecting or disconnecting the remote. Here is a link to pictures of the Nalcom timer grip to see what I mean. http://super8arena.com/nalcom-ftl-timer-grip-p-350.html But you can also trigger the camera by connecting a hole for tripod mount and a hole with a silver metallic plate next to it on the bottom of the camera so if you can DIY you only need two wires and a switch...
