stability of cores in transport 400' mag arriflex s

Post by MattWalters »

hi there I'm wondering what the stability of a core is like oonce in stalled in the 400's arriflex 16 S mag, ive got to shoot in various locations, but only 100 feet at each one, im kinda worried about moving the camera around too much lest the film cone on a core or god forbid fall off

should I be worried? any precautions ? are some things impossible, like shooting sideways ?

thanks!

also if anyone knows if its possible to change the mirror shutter angle on a arri 16 S that would be great as I plan to shoot some 1fps stuff but dont want each frame being extremely long of an exposure

What makes you think your camera magazine will cone? I have not used that camera but my experience with an SR2 and Eclair cameras is that coning is more of an issue when you are unloading or loading the magazine. Once loaded these cameras are quite durable (think of the various war and media scrum footage shot on 16mm) just don't forget to check the gate for hair when you are done!

Some magazines (particularly old ones) can accomodate a daylight spool, if yours can take one then maybe it would be safer to just buy 100ft loads? If you have rewinds and a darkroom you could wind the daylight spools onto cores or you can ask your lab to load them onto cores for you.

Stability that way is fine. There isn't much room for the film to do anything like that except when you unload. I've left film in 35mm mags for several shoots without a problem. I'd be more concerned about mounting and un-mounting to the camera properly to avoid any damaged perfs.
