leicina special filter and wide screen gate mod

Post by themagickite »

Ok so i just got my leicina special, i finally understand what people mean when they say it's well built!

There are a few things i've noticed after initial inspection

The main thing confirms what i read somewhere on this forum before, when you switch out the 85a color correction filter another colorless filter slides in its place. This really bothers me as the colorless filter seems quite foggy!

When you turn the dial there is a brief moment where neither filter is in place, i will try to capture this change-over during a test cart so i can see how badly my foggy filter is compromising the image.

I'm wondering if it's possible to do some sort of pro8mm style filter removal job, taking out both pieces of plastic and simplifying the image chain (relying on external filters when needed)

btw, if you are looking for an external filter adapter for the cinegon this one definitely works!

gives you a standard 39mm thread to work with.

the other thing i noticed is that it looks like the gate can easily be removed with a couple of screws, (i'm not sure i'd be likely to try this) i was thinking you could take it out and shave it down or manufacture a new wide gate to replace it. Sticking the cinegon on a gh1 confirmed my suspicion that it has enough image circle to cover 16mm which means it would never vignette, even going from one edge of the film to the other.

so i guess my question is, are either of these things possible?
thanks in advance!
