Super8: "Circle of Confusion" according to Kodak?

Post by jpolzfuss »

Hi,

there are various means to calculate the "Circle of Confusion". What result did Kodak use in their Android/Apple-proggy called "KODAK Cinema Tools"?

So there aren't any iPhone/Android-users in this forum? The tool is free and I only need the number displayed in this part of the tool after selecting "Super8":

Unfortunately all screenshots only show the number for 35mm - and Kodak doesn't provide a Symbian-version for my cell-phone from stoneage...

Pleassseee....

Thanks,
Jörg

Well, besides more film, I think an iPhone is in my near future. I always wait until after the first few generations to give time to work out any problems. Plus, when I make such purchase I need it to last a long time!

Using the settings in your screen shot (subject distance = 10', focal length = 50mm and f-stop = f/4) using super 8 instead of 35mm it gives the following:
Circle of confusion 0.0127mm
near limit: 9' 5"
Depth of field: 1' 3"
Far limit: 10' 8"
Hyperfocal Distance (H): 161' 6"

Are you just using the Circle of Confusion number to calculate depth of field for Super 8? The Kodak application doesn't have a setting for regular 8. Would the calculation for Super 8 apply to regular 8 as well?

I'm circled with confusion. :?:

Hi,
  • I would say that it's save to use 0.015mm or 0.0127mm for Regular 8, too: The German book "Amateurfilmbuch für Alle" (VEB Fotokinoverlag; Hempel, Rolf, Siegfried Mehnert und Peter Sbrzesny) says that it's save to use 0.015mm for all small gauges (16mm and less). I feared that this wasn't correct as in photography having smaller image areas results in having smaller "CoCs". And the image areas differs noticeably between Regular8, Super8 and 16mm. However it looks like the book is correct as http://www.dofmaster.com is obviously using 0.015mm for 16mm and as Kodak's 0.0127mm is close enough to 0.015mm. (Depending on which tool from http://www.dofmaster.com you're going to use, you couldn't select any values between 0.010 and 0.015mm any way.) When you take a look at the wikipedia, the CoC is rather complex as it involves viewing-distances, image sizes, enlargement factors, ... . So even though the images of Reg8 and Sup8 are much smaller on the film as for 16mm, I guess that Kodak and the authors of the mentioned book are assuming smaller projected images for Reg8 and Sup8 as well.
  • Some of my cameras do have a "depth of field"-table in the manual. However this isn't the case for all cameras and I don't have manuals for all of my cameras. As I now have a value for the CoC, I can use http://www.dofmaster.com/doftable.html to generate the missing "depth of field"-tables. :D

The Kodak application gives the same CoC value of 0.0127mm for super 8 and 16mm. It changes to 0.0254mm for 35mm.

So Kodak is also using the same CoC for both formats - like my book. Cool! :D

dofmaster is using 0.025mm

It looks like http://members.bitstream.net/~audadvnc/dofcalc2.html (one of S8 Booster's links) is using 0.025mm for 35mm, 0.017mm for 16mm and 0.010mm 8mm... so we've now got 3 different values for 16mm!
