I suppose Bazin could consider Red Balloon to be realist partly because it is very weak theater. Albeit lyrical it has a little bit more of what Bresson would have called “cinematography” than it has theater.

Bazin's argument is that the deception (or trick) owes nothing to photography. As a TV magician might say: "What you are about to see is not a camera trick".
