Re: Another JQ Update!
Roger are you getting any feedback or comments from the makers of the original show?

Re: Another JQ Update!
Well, Bill Hannah and Joe Barbera are dead but I have received emails from one of the original artists/animators that worked on the show and knew Doug Wildey very well. I am told that Doug would have loved my efforts, so that makes me feel pretty good. I've also been contacted by a couple of television producers in LA that are my age, grew up with Jonny Quest, and dig what I'm doing. So the response has been positive, so far.Scotness wrote:Roger are you getting any feedback or comments from the makers of the original show?

Cool maybe the producers could commission you to make something?? A stop motion series - would you be into that, or too much work??

We've said before that it's perfect for bumpers on the Cartoon Network. They should also do a documentary on the process so maybe you should be filming some what your doing too, not just pictures!
Re: Another JQ Update!
Okay, amazing stuff, as usual, but do you want a little tiny nitpicking critique of this segment? In contrast to the animated original, in your clip, Dr. Quest's eyes are too "beady."
Part of the effect of the big round dark pupils in the eyes of the animated Dr. Quest is that he appears strong, but mysterious at the same time. The eyes of your model seem really creepy somehow.
It might be difficult to achieve the same look in the stop motion model but making the pupils a bit bigger might give the eyes more "depth." And for more realism, don't forget the highlights in the pupil to avoid the "dead eyes" look.
Like I've said before, this is an amazing project and I can't even imagine the time/work/dedication to pull off such a fantastic piece of work. This is the only segment where I was just bugged by a little detail.
Tim
edit: After looking at the large blowup of the still image, I see you have the highlights in the pupils. But still, with the bigger pupils, maybe the highlights could be more pronounced--think anime eyes!

Thanks!etimh wrote:Okay, amazing stuff, as usual,
I agree to a degree but I don't think there is anything I can really do about it. The real problem is that the cartoon characters have no whites in their eyes. Nadda. Zip. None. They just put black dots over the flesh colored face. I can't really do that on a 3D model because it would look freakin' weird. IF anything, I think the black eyes of my model are the same size, if not bigger.etimh wrote:.... but do you want a little tiny nitpicking critique of this segment? But because I have white surrounding the eyes, they reallllly stand out and seem beadier compared to the black on flesh eyes of the cartoon.
But I do know what you mean about the eyes not really matching. It is something I wrestled with a bit before settling on what I ended up with.
EDIT: I should point out that there are several versions of Dr. Quest. On this shot, his eye sockets are delineated but, on other shots like the cockpit, he just has black dots on flesh, like Race and the others. Compared to those shots, my eyes are bigger but, compared to this shot, they do look smaller. The problem is trying to find a compromise on which "version" to base the model on.
An anime Jonny Quest? Eewwwww. (shiver)

Re: Another JQ Update!
It looks like there is some "white" in the eye of the animated version, at least in the still capture you have posted. Though you're right, it doesn't really look white, but the outline of the eye is there.
I know you're a painter yourself so you are probably aware of this, but after years of figure drawing I learned that the pupils of people's eyes are really bigger than you think. We tend to assume that they are smaller because we want to them to "fit" within the confines of the outline of the eye.
But go look at some close-up magazine images of women's eyes--the pupils are really quite large and are rarely seen in their entirety because of the overlapping top and bottom lids.
Still, the segment looks great.

Nah, but they do some interesting eyes, don't you think?MovieStuff wrote:An anime Jonny Quest? Eewwwww. (shiver)

Re: Another JQ Update!
Okay, decided that perhaps Tim had a good point. So I went back in and enlarged the black part of the eyes to make them more friendly and less "beady". Good call, Tim.
