shallow dof super8

Post by DanielVerlane »

Hi, Im new to the forum and super8. You've all been a great help. I have a question regarding capturing shallow dof. If I had the Beaulieu 4008 I would think I could find a lens to do the job without light loss. I've only found examples on line done with a dof adapter that really look like what Im after. If it works with this adapter shouldn't it work without it If I had a camera with interchangeable lenses? Ive read some conflicting things. And as I dont have one to experiment with as of yet, Im hoping someone else has. Thanks.

The factors that influence depth of field are the aperture, the focal length of the lens, the distance between the camera and the point of lens focus, and the size of the image area (film format). Super 8, being a very small image area, has a naturally large depth of field. Nothing you can do about that. Changing the lens will only make a difference if you change to a much longer focal length lens. For example, if the maximum focal length of your beaulieu lens is 80mm, swapping to a 135mm will make a big difference to your depth of field, however you will now be shooting in reasonably extreme telephoto. If you are after images shot in telephoto, then that works - otherwise, you'll need to go down the dof adapter rout if you want a narrow depth of field without resorting to a long focal length lens.
