R.I.P Leslie Nielson

He was pure comic gold in Airplane and The Naked Gun movies. And played a villain superbly in Creep Show. And not forgetting his other 'serious' roles in The Poseidon Adventure and Forbidden Planet.

I liked that mock interview he created for an ad a few years ago in which a clown offers him a sandwich near the end.

Leslie Neilson: "I'll never take a sandwich from a clown"
Media (confused): "Why??"
Leslie Neilson: "They taste funny."

In my movie reference book the Forbidden Planet is rated as the finest science fiction film ever made.

And not forgetting his other 'serious' roles in The Poseidon Adventure and Forbidden Planet.

At first I was, "The Poseidon Adventure? Nielson wasn't in that." Then I remembered--he was the captain! Good call. Forbidden Planet is awesome of course, but I was just looking over his credits--man, he had one hell of a career in TV. Steady all the way back to the beginnings.

Leslie Nielson might have discovered late in his career that he was a very good comic actor, but prior to Airplane (which I never found especially funny) he enjoyed a varied and respected career as a leading man in film and TV.

For me his two finest hours were Forbidden Planet and The Naked Gun. I've been a fan of Forbidden Planet since I was about 10 years old (1983) and everything about that film works so well - a lesson in film making!

He enjoyed a remarkably consistent career, being in demand from his early acting years right through to the end.
