safely filing out a projector gate for super 16 telecine

Post by NPEason »

I have an EIKI NT-0 projector which I have turned into a telecine machine. I would like to convert the gate to super 16 and am wondering if anybody has any tips for doing this without turning my telecine into a scratch-a-cine.

According to my measurements, all sides of the gate will have to be filed, as well as the left and right sides of the pressure plate.

I'm guessing if I just file with good technique pushing down away from the film side only(as to not create burrs towards the film) and polishing with a dremel or something I will be fine, but I would love any input.

I have done this twice on my R8 Eumig and on my S8 Eumig. Like you say, remove the burrs with a Dremel and when everything is done, clean the parts very careful to remove all metal particles. To be 100% sure, you can also check for any left over burr with a strong magnifying glass.

Succes!

Fred.

Final check is to make a loop of perfect scratch-free film (leader is OK) and run it through the projector endlessly for ten minutes and then inspect with a magnifying
lens for any damage. My favorite is the B+H JAN. Overhaul specs requires 2000 passes without any damage.

A bit off topic but once at a camera fair I came across a 16mm projector with the wording "Super 16" on it. As Super 16 was never intended as a projection format, I guess it could have just been a fancy brand name, nothing more.

Pathé made a 16mm camera called the "Super 16"...
