'Peeping Tom' airing on Aussie TV this week

Post by Patrick »

The 1960s cult film 'Peeping Tom' will air on Australian television this coming Tuesday in the afternoon. It will be on the new GEM channel, having previously aired on Go! I reckon it will be of particular interest to many of you film buffs because of all the cool retro film gear on display during the movie. The main character, who is psychological scarred, murders young women while filming them with a Bell & Howell 16mm camera. There are a few 'projector screening' scenes too. I was reading the synopsis in The Advertiser's Sunday Mail TV guide and I just about fell out of my chair when I came across the line "...a desire to murder women and use a video camera to film their dying expressions of terror.”

Hi Patrick
Good spotting its a classic alright. Great that its on during the day, especially since it was banned originally, so now the kids can watch it.
Free to air as well.
We got this one on dvd.

Ha ha video camera!

As Baumgarten wrote in one of his instructions people have qurious reasons to want to process their own film and fabricate tools or methods for the that. Like the wooden racks or using a garden hose.

This is obviously one good reason to do your own processing of film. :)
Kind regards,

André

Ive just watched this film in it's entirety (I previously saw parts of it when it screened on Go!) When I watched it on Go!, I thought I recall seeing the spike in the tripod near the beginning of the film as the first victim was being murdered. This time around on the GEM channel, I saw no spike in that particular scene (only in the later scenes.) Is my memory playing tricks on me or was that brief part cut from the film for this latest screening?

I'd have to watch it again to be absolutely sure, but I don't think the spike is revealed until later, when he is about to kill Moira Shearer. That's the point (bad pun) of the first scene--you're not sure exactly what he's doing and what has happened to the woman. Only later do you realize that he kills in that unique way that he does (don't want to ruin it for those who have yet to see it).

I have this on Criterion DVD, which is unfortunately now OOP. You can still get a copy of it used or a bit overpriced new on Amazon. Highly recommended as it is a great print and DVD edition with some nice extras. But I've also heard that it may be heading for a blu-ray revamp from Criterion and there is supposed to be an Optimum blu-ray release on November 1st.

A must have for sure.
