SMPTE Leader on Commerical Releases?

Post by woods01 »

I'm looking to get Super 8 sized Academy or preferably a SMTPE leader, which I understand is a hard thing to come across in 8mm. Are these usually found on commercially released films? I've never bought one before.

Thank you for the quick reply but that appears to be a SMTPE Testfilm, not the countdown leader.

Hi,

the leader used to be listed on that page right above the Testfilm. However it was Gebuhr's leader and not the SMPTE-leader - but the only difference between the Gebuhr- and the SMPTE-version was the fact that one had a Gebuhr-logo in one of the frames while the other one sported a SMPTE-logo.
Unfortunately the Super8-version has been removed from Wittner's catalogue, so only the "GEBUHR Startband 16mm" is left.

What about commercial Super 8 prints? Surely someone on this board has watched commercial print or two and knows if they start the reel with the countdown?

Hi,

yes, most of my commercial prints start with a countdown with special frames marked as "sound start" etc. pp. . However all of them looks more like this one or this video after 0:20. Hence I don't recall having the countdown that looks a little bit like an "analogue watch" on Super8.

Thank you, I'll pick up some cheap print off ebay. I like the idea that the countdown is different from the larger guages.
