Canon Autozoom 814 - opinions needed

Post by sonikdeth »

Hi, FIrst of all I would like to say what a great site this is....I have been lurking here for a bit and it is a great source of info for someone who is just discovering super 8 really (thats me by the way)

Anyway, enough sucking up and back to my point. I have the chance to by the aforementioned camera for around £70. I want to get a camera that has 24fps as this one does and wanted to know if it is a decent-ish camera for the price? It is all working apparently but unboxed and without instructions. I had a look at the manual you have posted here and it doesn't mention any thing about a slow motion (36fps presumably) setting which the guy selling the camera says it has. Is there a version with this feature or am I mistaken on the model of the camera (looks like the 814 autozoom...perhaps has a few more knob)...I don't think it is the 814XL though.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Welcome Sonikdeath!

I've posted the specs below from http://www.kolumbus.fi/puistot/c.htm (which is a good site for info on cameras) :

Canon 814 Autozoom Electronic

Year: 72-77

Weight: 1500 g

Lens: Canon zoom 1,4 / 7,5 - 60 mm

Macro focusing

Split Image Focusing

Auto / Manual Zoom

Frame rates: 18, 24, 40 + single frame

Shutter degree: Variable (the 1014e is listed as having 150, 75 and 37.5 degree shutters - is this true of the 514????)

Manual / Auto Exposure

Flash contact

Fades

Remote control socket

No sound

Made in Japan

Original price in England (in the year of introduction): £219

Recently paid in eBay net auction: $102 eBay7/99 $162 eBay8/99

http://www.mondofoto.com/cameras/Canon_ ... onic_2.jpg

So from these specs, it would appear to have slow motion at 40fps. Have never actually used this camera though, and listings are sometimes wrong...

Good luck!

Hi Sonikdeth

If the camera is the Canon 814 autzoom (I know because I nearly bought one of these the other day) then no, there is no slow motion facility. It will only shoot at 12, 18 and 24 fps.

There are four versions of the Canon 814. The 814 Autozoom, the 814 Autozoom electronic, the 814 XL and the 814XLS.
All of the last three have slow motion, either at 40 or 36 fps but not the standard Autozoom. Ask whoever is selling it exactly what model it is.

I have a Canon 814 and there is no slow motion facility. I have an XL too and there is slow motion on that but the camera itself does not produce such good results as the ordinary model. The 814 has one of the best lenses ever put on a camera and the clarity of the imagery is unbelievable every time.

Thanks for the super quick replys..

I think the camera is probably the 814 autozoom electronic in that case. I doubt the guy would advertise at such if there was no slow motion facility.....I might just buy this if I can bring myself to part with £70.

It's strange that the XL doesn't produce such good results as the ordinary model....this model sounds closer to the plain 814 than the XL so hopefully image quality is in line with that.

canon cameras

I use a canon 1014 and have used the 814XL. I finnd the canons to be excellent cameras although a bit heavy/combersome to use.
If you want to check prices go to ebay.com but if it works well I think 70 isnt to far of the mark, a little expensive in anything but a good solid camera none the less.

I've seen Canon 814's for sale at British Film Collectors Conventions for as little as £25. Generally they are more expensive than this but make sure it is a good one for £70.

The next BFCC is not until October if you've just missed the May event. Loads of photos of the event have been posted under 'Past Events' on http://www.bfcc.biz

i just bought a non electronic 814 autozoom for around $11 at a flea market in stockholm. it was just in and didn't have a price tag, and the guy handling the cameras was out, so the clerk looked at an old non working eumig fixed focus point and shoot and said he'd sell this one for the same price. :-)

it's in absolutly perfect condition, not even dusty, everything feels solid and moves/turns very easily, the 85 filter is in good shape, the manual aperture works but there's no battery for the automatic, and it's *almost completely silent*. anyway, i still don't know if i'm going to keep it. it would be a nice backup camera to my 814 electronic but i'm broke as usual and i could probably get $100 for it on ebay, right? what do you think? i guess i'll have to shoot some test with it first. perhaps it's even my new first camera...
