lighting for super8....

Post by richalezio »

Hi everyone

What would be the better choice for super8 in-door studio filming?

red-head lights or Blondes?

Redheads are smaller and cheaper to buy and to run.

2 or 3 Redheads for the price of 1 Blonde would be a much better investment.

Simples.

If your budget allows for it and you've got a large space to light, why not go for both? One Blonde and 2-3 Redheads would probably make a good mixture. If it's a smaller space, one Redhead and a couple of Fresnels may be a better idea.

Are you buying or renting? What kind of subject are you lighting? A person or a set? Is there a ceiling grid to hang lights from or will everything be on stands?

Fresnels are more versatile and worth the extra money. They give you more control over the light, have nicer shadows and are better for lighting faces. Depending on the manufacturer (Mole-Richardson usually) you can open the front of the light and swing the lens out of the way if you decide you need a hard light source.

Redheads are better for lighting backgrounds than actors unless you've got a Chimera kit (more $$) or access to a good variety of heavy diffusion (which you should have on hand regardless). I like using them to bring up the ambient light in a room by bouncing them into a corner or using them on trees and buildings for night shots.
