Beaulieu 4008 Ultrawide lens.

Hello, I have a Beaulieu 4008 ZM2 with the Optivaron 6-66mm macro lens and would like to buy a Schneider Kreuznach ultrawide III lens to increase the field of view. I have heard that most of the lens that appear on the likes of Ebay are made of moulded plastic and that they are susceptible to scratching. If I can find a clean example do they produce acceptable results. Is it true that there are versions of this lens by Schneider that are made of glass rather than plastic. The glass version of the UWL III lens is available from Wittner Kinotechnik - http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/katal ... optike.php. It's called verson 'C'. I've found the plastic version requires very careful setting of the lens to which its fitted to assure sharp focus and have opted instead to use a 2.5mm f/1.8 fixed focus C-mount lens made specifically for the Super 8 format by Century Optics in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This lens provides a field of view slightly wider than the UWL III and it's a lot lighter than the Schneider-Kreuznach 6-66mm f/1.8 and 6-70mm f/1.4 Optivaron lenses with a UWL III attached.

Sorry, but there is no glass version. This would be excessively heavy and expensive as well.

Instead, some of the versions Wittner is selling have a metal mount instead of one made of plastics.

An alternative is to use a c-mount cctv wide angle lens together with a wide adaptor from a video or digital camera. I have a Pentax Cosmicar and Raynox setup, it's light and the images are nice.

Works out to about 3mm ( about 24mm on a 35mm SLR ) focal length I think.

An alternative is to use a c-mount cctv wide angle lens together with a wide adaptor from a video or digital camera. I have a Pentax Cosmicar and Raynox setup, it's light and the images are nice.

When scouting and buying one of these mind that you need a standard C-mount :!:
These CS-mount versions who are plentiful and cheap are not suitable for Beaulieu C-mount. And there is no adapter to extend the backfocus a bit!

Very good point aj. C-mount not the CS-mount with the rear lens element sticking out that can damage your camera besides not being able to focus.

The Cosmicar and Raynox set up sounds like a good substitute for the Schneider Ultrawide. I have just bought an Ultrawide off Ebay and can see some fine cleaning marks, I would guess that it is almost impossible to find a mint unmarked lens that is now 30+ years old and made of plastic. I shall give it a try though now that I have bought it. I am interested which focal length Cosmicar was used in the above photo and which Raynox lens, also how compatible are the various thread sizes, are stepping rings required. Regards, Stuart.

The Cosmicar is a 6mm lens which has a filter thread of 40.5mm, while the Raynox wide adapter is 52mm so you need a 52mm to 40.5mm stepping ring to attach the wide to the cctv lens.

Since you got the Schneider Ultrawide now why not give it a try, should be ok to use if it's not too badly scratched and if you are not shooting against the light.

Hi, I bought a cosmic 6mm to use in a beaulieu 4008 ZM4,but I think I have to turn the screw to have the sharp focus.
Apparently there is no physical problem of fitting the lens, when working with a closed f-stop like 8 or 11 do not noticeable but when I work with it fully open apparently is out of focus, and the solution according to experiments that did is unscrew 1/4 turn of the screw to get focused fine.
Then I think I have to add a washer on the threads of a certain thickness to that screw least 1/4 back.

Does anyone know anything of this situation or have a similar problem?

The lens needs to be collimated to your camera. If the lens is used on more than one camera, you can use spacers provided the required adjustment is slight. I've used a Brass spacer ring kit sold by Edmund Optics with success. See http://www.edmundoptics.com/onlinecatal ... StartRow=1.
