Film in a landfill

Post by Actor »

I know a guy who works in a landfill. Recently someone threw away several reels of 35mm movie film. The rules at his work site prohibit employees from taking anything home but he managed to sneak out about 3 feet of it. We cleaned it up as best we could and examined it with a loupe. It looks like the end of a trailer for the movie The Perfect Game starring Cheech Marin. According to the IMDb The Perfect Game was released earlier this year (2009), so presumably whatever the film was spliced onto was also recent. The mystery is why is someone throwing away a recent 35mm print.

Sure it's not a trailer? Theaters do throw away 35mm trailers.

As a kid, I would weekly dig through the dumpster of the local multiplex to get film. Almost without fail, I would come away with a garbage bag full of unwound trailers and odd bits of features. One had to be careful as the dumpster was very slick with popcorn "butter". The smell at the height of summer was really something else.
