Where to go in San Fancisco and where to buy S8 stuff?

Post by Chris-B »

I'm off to San Francisco soon (I've never been to the US before) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a 1st timer.

I was wondering where to buy super 8 (I’ll bring some with me, it’s just in case I run out) and if there are any good camera shops? I found Action Camera so far but no others.

I going to take my Canon 514xl with its C8 wide-angle lens and my Agfa Isolette III 120 6X6 camera. They weigh in at just 1.4kg for the two, this means I can just throw them into a rucksag and always have them with me.
(I'm still thinking of taking my Nizo 561macro just in case)

Also any recommendations for good flea markets, thrift stores, vinyl record stores, film memorabilia/cult film stores, cinema, art, vegetarian food, trips in and around SF….. or anything else you dig in SF, as I might dig it too!

Look up adolf gasser's store - its huge and last time I checked, they had the second floor dedicated to movie stuff (no relation to Roger). Google "adolf gasser's san francisco" and you will be a happy camper...

I was in SF last month! I checked out action camera (taraval and 26th) and it's pretty nice. I was looking for vision2, which they didn't have, but they did have tri-x plus-x and e64t I believe..

For vinyl records, I walked into a huuuuge record store on haight and shrader, i dont remember the name but it was one of the biggest record stores ive ever seen, definitely worth it..

I liked SF, nice relaxed vibe going on in the city...

probably Amoeba Records-- there's one in L.A. too. Nice place.

man, San Francisco. What a fantastic city. The most incredible climate you can imagine, with lots of variety. Be sure to visit Berkeley for the bookstores that are still left on Telegraph. Adolph Gasser was at one time THE place for movie equipment of all kinds. Nice to hear they still have an interest. I'd imagine the best place to get film too.

Will you have a car? I'll make a list. Watch Vertigo before you go.

Cool, I'll check out Adolph Gasser.
We were thinking of hiring a bicycles, but we might hire a car if there is stuff to see out of bicycle range.

Does anywhere do 120film processing and printing? If there is a 24hr or 48hr service somewhere I can get some photographs processed and printed while I'm still there.

I'll pick up a copy on Verigo tomorrow!

Hi,

as for vinyls, there was a large store in Haight-Ashbury (in Haight Street if I don't mix up things). But there was a much larger store on the other side of the bay in Berkley near the campus... From SF it was only a few stops with the BART...

No matter what you do, you're going to have a great time! An awesome place. I'm from there, but live in L.A. now. For books on film try City Lights Booksellers at 261 Columbus Ave., at the corner of Broadway, it's a famous S.F. destination. Amoeba Music is at 1855 Haight Street. Roxie Cinema is in kind of a seedy neighborhood but it's cool, right now they're showing Werner Herzog's Encounters at the End of the World, and around the corner in the same seedy neighborhood is Taqueria La Cumbre, where the burritos used to be good a few years ago. Definitely see Berkeley, visit the Cal campus, it's very easy to get to from S.F. on BART, Berkeley is one of the world's most precious places. The best breakfast in the world is at Fatapples on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. in Berkeley. Adolph Gasser's is still there I think, I have a Beaulieu 4008 backwind knob in a box with an Adolph Gasser price tag on it -- $65 in 1985.

Don't forget CHrissy Field...along the waterfront (on your way to the Golden Gate Bridge). Nice sand, lots of people watching...free parking there too. Showers and bathrooms if you need them while out sight seeing...be sure to walk over the bridge...it's awesome.

Enjoy!
Cheers,
Mike
