Post by Andreas Wideroe »

I need some information about this for a friend of mine. Anyone know who does this in Europe and what quality one can expect?

Cheers,
Andreas

I know Vidar, but I'd like to get some feedback from people who have done this to hear what the results were like. I've got a couple of places that do this on my list already, but as always I'm hungry for more info..

I did some blow up tests from Super8 to 16 and 35 through Monaco Labs in San Francisco USA. I did not use the Vision 200T since it was not made at the time. I thought that it looked good not great the B&W seemed to look better than the color. Monaco said that reversal stocks can have some dodgey results because Kodak has stopped making some of the better(for reversal) dupe and print stocks they made in the past.

Good Luck

I've seen some footage where a girl I knew did this for a personal documentary. It was originally shot on K40, and she blew it up to 16mm. It was a little contrasty and slightly grainier compared to the other 16mm, but otherwise pretty good. Although the version I saw was the workprint version, and not on the fine print stock, which probably would have taken care of most of that.

She got her transfers done at Film Craft Lab in Michigan, USA. (http://www.filmcraftlab.com) They are expensive, but they do a wonderful job on all their services. But that probably isn't a help for you, Andreas, as they are a little far from Europe...

data blow up

Post by Daniel »

Hello Andreas,

If you are looking for DATA blow-up, I know that VTR London is currently owning a Spirit Data Cine with s8 capability. They scan super 8mm @ 2k data resolution. I have not worked with them yet.

Daniel

Hello,

Yes, it is http://www.vtr.co.uk
The material is scanned as 10bit log dpx files via Spirit
Datacine into VTR's Specter Virtual Telecine, to be graded using Pandora's
Megadef Colour correcter, according to VTR company source.

In Spain, I know you can transfer to HD, in Telson company.

Daniel

Sure they got high-tech stuff at VTR but forget the 2K chain if you're on your own. Better prefer the SD chain (damn expensive already).

Hello,

Yes, Telson company can transfer super 8mm to HDTV via Spirit scanner, according to Telson source.
Answering to Matt, I wanted to say that this topic is related to super 8mm blow up to 16 and 35mm. In this case 2k digital intermediate is an excelent option from technical point of view.
SDTV environment is today primarly intended for TV final release, not in order to get top quality film output.

Shoot S8 + scan @ 2k + arri laser recorder (or similare) -> 35mm = expensive!!!

Might aswell just shoot 35 in the first place.
