Need a Stabilizer Plug-in

Post by T-Scan »

Does anyone know if universal plug-ins are available? I'm using Sony Vegas. I Did an awsome time lapse, but it was a windy day, and there is some jumpyness. I want to use this shot in a video, but the jitter is killing me.

Does it have to be a plug-in, or can you do all the editing first, export to avi or something, then stabilize last in a standalone version?
If the latter, VirtualDub has a stabilizer plugin, and the price is right. Also, the people on the Liquid forum I lurk on really love Mercalli from proDAD
http://www.prodad.de/gb/mercalli_std_details.html ($60-120). And it looks like they're working on a plugin for Vegas.

Thanks for bringing this topic up!!

The demo on SteadyHand looks good. Which one of these does the best job??? Has anyone tried both of them. From the looks of it this is a must have type of product - but which???

Thanks for the tips! Im looking to apply it to one particular shot. It would be best to apply it to the one scene within the Vegas virtual file before rendering. So I guess I would need something that can work with my NLE?

Looks like the Steadyhand will only work with AVI's. The Marcali product is what I need, but doesn't appear to be compatable with Vegas yet. I'll check out Virtual dub.

Hey T-Scan,

The Deshaker plugin for VirtualDub is well know as being one of the best stabilizers availabe. It works in two passes. It writes a log file in the first pass and reads this file in the second pass.

And.... It's free...

Good luck!

Fred.

Hi,

For those of you who tested it, do the plugin for virtualdub do better job than After Effects plugins (FilmFix for example, which is very efficient but very VERY time consuming) ?

if you have fcp 6 you have a built in stabilizer that's fantastic, or you can use motion which is even more fantastic. if you're on an older version i can recommend istabilize. very nice standalone program.

after looking at all the demos on both sites about a dozen times I dont think it really makes much difference which one you get but Im leaning toward steadyhand. check out their demo of the sailboat. it gives you an idea of how much work the software actually has to do. pretty cool. Im thinking about a project from years back that I can now save. very nice!!

Working with stabilizers can be addictive. You can get that "steady cam" look even on Super 8 footage. But watch out, it takes practice to get the settings right.

I think Mattias turned me on to iStabilize a few years ago and I loved it. The new one in Motion rocks too.

One cool thing is if you have HD footage, you can stabilze it almost completely and then crop it down to SD without loosing resolution in SD. Not sure if I said that well... but it can be a fun effect.

Shake has good tools for stabilizing footage - they're also relatively simple to understand compared to most of the program - but it's not a plug-in.

I downloaded it and played around last night. It's kind of strange at first because they seem to assume you know how to use it already... but i think i have it figured out... you bring up the Deshaker, and play the clip for each pass, then render after the second pass? Anyway, I almost got it last night but the aspect ratio was all out of wack. I'll go through it again tonight.

So far this V-dub blows! Do I have to be a rocket scientist to use this thing? I just want to get rid of some jitter, but I have to know every bit of tech specs down to the pixel, and a whole bunch of BS I don't even understand. So far my processed files come out cropped on the left and right and still jittery!
