...well, this site doesn't have the best search function. In fact, a better way to search the archives here is to have google do the work. Here is the beta:

go to advanced search in google / select site: filmshooting.com / type in your keywords and press go. It works pretty well.

I'm on that project by the way. If you go to that Workhorse site you will find a link to Citizen Super 8, which is the next follow-up project after cities. The submission deadlines are posted there along with the requirements for the project.

Check all over the first 5 pages of this forum. Nathan is very proud of the project! In fact, he has a similar project right now called Citizen Super-8 which I believe he is still looking for participants. Buy the dvd from him too.

After waiting two weeks for Super-8 Cities [checking the post box everyday for the last few days] it arrived.

Imagine the disappointment to open the case to find the disc had slid around inside, scratched useless. Disappointment turned to fury to see the case hub was at least 2 mm. smaller that the hole in the disc.

You know, I can tell when I snap a disc onto a case hub if it's fixed in place -- small thing to do actually when returning a rental DVD.

OK, after waiting two weeks I don't give up -- that is until both the DVD player and the Macbook refused to recognize it as a "supported format." Maybe they don't like scratches either.

The real disappointment is I had hopes that I-net sales of DVDs would prove a viable opportunity for creative output, but based on this performance, it ruins it for a whole cottage industry.

Maybe thats what happened to my dvd. Now that you bring it up I recall it was banging around loose in the case. It would only loop on the menu. I brought it up on another thread where it was suggested that my dvd player might be at fault. I basically bought it to support the work however and didnt worry about it after that; until now that is. This might be something that indie dvd producers might want to make sure of when purchasing materials to put these packages together.

Are the discs DVD-R,+R or DVD-5's? If they were replicated, I am sure the company they hired for the replication did the packaging. In which case, the people from Super8Cities would have no idea the hub was too small for the disc.

Does the packaging and everything look professional? Or does it look like it was printed at Kinko's? I'm sure it is a dvd-5 as dvd-9 dual layer discs cost way too much. And as for dvd+/-r the difference in playability is negligible with any modern dvd player (within the last 5 years). Hell, my first player from 2000 plays everything I throw at it except cheap Taiwanese or Chinese discs.

Besides the scratching, it's most likely an NTSC authoring error as, from what I've read, no one has complained about the PAL version.

I had the same problem and told Nathan about it. Luckily the scratches
weren't bad enough to affect playing on my machine. I've bought many
cds and dvds off eBay (some even in the UK too) with no shipping problems
but the experience has made me more cautious in my own shipping. The
solution is to just buy those paper sleeves to protect the disc. They cost
about 2 or 3 cents each when bought at a bulk office supplier.

The actual disc and booklet looked pretty professional, damn annoying
about the shipping problems. The disc menu itself does have some errors
in the NTSC version but does not prevent you from checking out all the
films.

I am sorry your disc came loose. This seems to be a problem with USPS handling since this has not happened within Europe and of course I will send you out a new one.

There is no problem with the NTSC encoding. It is tried and tested - your disc is just scratched - unfortunate but easily remedied.
