Deals with the Devil (Re: Bell&Howell Filmo70D 16mm)

Post by tfunch24 »

My computer stinks of brimstone because I recently put in an order for a 100' double-perforated roll of Plus-X 16mm reversal film from the lab that everybody loves to hate...Pro8mm (aka Super8Sound).

I can hardly wait to see what happens.

Cheapest way to get S-8mm or 16mm is direct from Kodak. I only mention it because I have seen the prices from Pro-8 and they are
pretty high. You can find less expensive dealers around. Try Chambliss
near Atlanta. Good luck and let us all know how your first roll comes out. I was amazed that Plus-X came in at the bottom of one survey on the stock of preference for S-8mm shooters. Plus-X Reversal 16mm is great projected on a screen and it is even better when it is printed. The independant hit film "PI" was filmed in 16mm Plus-X Reversal (not Super 16mm) and it looked great blown up to 35mm on the theatre screens.

The price does include processing, so I'm not paying for raw stock alone. Still $39 does seem a little steep.

I've only shot three or four rolls of Plus-X. I thought the results looked fine. I really like the look of Tri-X.

If you're just experimenting, and you like b&w, consider getting filmstock from a place like Film Emporium (100' of 7222 costs about $10 for a recan) and processing from Franklin labs (100' for $12).

16mm Plus-X rev 2R

Post by Michael »

I tried to order Plus-X 16mm rev 2R here in the UK and they laughed and said that mine was the first request they ever got. You can't get that here. I'd be a special order from Denver and take 6 weeks.

Michael,

Did you try to order through Pro8mm or one of the other companies mentioned?

There shouldn't be a problem as I'm in the U.S.

The film arrived today. Also, Pro8mm sent me a free "Pro8mm" baseball cap with the film.

The film is in the freezer now. I'm waiting until I get a manual for my B&H Filmo before shooting it.

I will keep those interested informed.

I guess I should tell you all about my amazing find at a Sunday market. There was a guy at a stall selling a pile of 16mm black and white film stock (out of date of course) for $2 each. Included in the films were both Tri X and Plus X films as well as one high speed film that I can't exactly recall the name of...something like 4X or High X or something like that. The films are at least 15 years old. However, I exposed one of them and it turned out fine. The rest are still sitting in my fridge.

Well, I shot the film two weeks ago, stuck it in my closet, and I'm going to mail it off tomorrow (Monday, 5/19/2003). I should have it back sometime next week.

I used the Wollensak wideangle fixed focus lens. The manual that I have doesn't really do a great job of describing how to set the lens, so I was forced to guess. We'll see how it turns out.

I did not have a changing bag, so I loaded the film in a closet that was completely dark.

Also, not 16mm related, but take a look at this, if you have the time:

Actually Kodak is not always the cheapest place to get super 8 . There is a place in New Jersy ( I forgot the name) But if you buy at least $100 worth then you can get it for about $9.00 and some change. With shipping it works out to about 10.08 per cartridge
