My projector blown!

Post by lastcoyote »

Hi everyone,

I bought a very clean and new projector from 2nd hand shop. It was really cool and clean. The lens are almost brand new.

Anyway, I turn it on and it plays perfectly in everyway.

Then I went in the room finding some other films to try, it was plugged, but off the switch. Then in the middle of the night, I heard a hugh "POP" 8O while I'm in my room searching for films. The sound as loud as someone fire a .40 pistol in the middle of the night 8O . I ran out the dinning room where I placed my projector. It was smoke all over the room. The projector blown. The back cover of it blown away! I can't imagine what would happen if I sitting next to it when it blows...

Two days later I opened it up and find this piece of part blown:

Man I'm no electric guy and no background of anything like it, is there anyone who can tell me what part is this silver cyclinder? Then I can go buy new parts to fix this beauty.

Thanks a lot.
When my life finish, every single frame of my films loop my thought…

Lucky you were out of the room and nobody was hurt, what kind of projector is it?

Reminds me of a projector that I got from the flea market a few years back, ( It was a Bolex SP8 sound ) soon as I plugged it in and it went "BANG"...my wife jumped out of her seat. It turned out to be a short in the power supply transformer inside, and luckily I had a broken projector with a good transformer which I was able to replace. Now whenever I get any secondhand projectors I always open it up just to see what the innards is like, any loose wiring etc and "STAND WELL AWAY" before plugging it in.

I am not an electronic whiz either but from your photo it looks like it's some kind of a capacitor, I wonder if you can get it in electronic store in Shum Shui Po?

Good luck!

Bill

Looks like a multi-capacitor. Looking at the writing on the cap it has terminals for .07uF, 2500pF and 2500pF.

Try electronics parts outlets and stores. Places like Digikey.com may have what you're looking for.

You can also use 3 separate caps (One .07uF and two 2500pF) as well.

John pretty much nailed it on the head in his response above, that's a multi-cap. It's a little tough to make out which leads are which (i.e. common, .07micor-farads, 2500, 2500pico-farads) from those pictures but three separate non-polarized caps would do the trick if you can't find the real thing. Was the cap removed from chassis ground when it popped or did you remove the grounding screw to make part identification easier? At first glance it would appear that the cap is across the hot and neutral of the main 230vac power input. Basically an input filter cap before rectification, each leg 2500pf to ground, and .07uf across the pair. Like I said it's hard to tell more from the pictures. Not a high dollar item but may be hard to find.

Post a question over on the film-tech forum. Some of those guys tinker with rebuilding projectors as a hobby and may have a lead on exact replacement parts.

Good luck and let is know how it goes...

Commiserations - my visacustic died a couple of weeks back also - it powers up & lamp is ok but no motor action at all. Need to perform surgery on it, but out here in the West Indies donor parts are going to be a serious problem... good luck.

Possibly the motor is fighting a broken drive cogwheel...

Shipping the whole projector back and forth is hardly an option but still possible.
Then you may need this: http://www.parallaxe.nl/nl/desnek.htm

BTW the capacitor in the image is a Wide band filter against interference.
