Super8 experimental doco makes waves on festival circuit

Post by dagman »

A new Australian 16 minute experimental documentary shot entirely on Super8 (TriX & K40) is doing surprisingly well for itself on the international film festival circuit. After winning 'best film' at local Fleurieu Film Festival in South Australia, it premiered internationally in Amsterdam at IDFA (something like the Cannes of documentary) and has gone on to win accolades and secure screenings in the USA, Canada, Israel, Uganda, Albania... and if the trend holds, hopefully many more. The film is directed by Dan Monceaux (me) and was co-produced and shot in partnership with Emma Sterling, under the 'danimations' flag.

The film is called 'A Shift in Perception'.

Content wise, the film explores the perception, memories and dreams of three blind women, and was shot silently, illustrating a soundtrack constructed of informal interview samples and mesmerising acoustic music by Alex Carpenter. The film also takes advantage of the range of production techniques Super8 equipment is capable of, from smooth slow motion to time lapse and from macro photography to wide angle experiments and stop-motion animation.

If this appeals to you, check to see if there's a screening coming up near you (they're being updated weekly at this stage) or jump in and buy yourself a copy directly from our website. Your support will guarantee we use Super8 in the next film we make. :D

The prices on the DVD seem friendly enough. It is all including shipping and they are on stock?
Kind regards,

congrats. the film looks very cool. i'm not surprised that it's super 8 and successful though. i had similar success with a super 8 short i made a few years ago, and while i also had my doubts before, people seemed to like the aesthetics. seems like both you and i had stories that were well suited for the format though, so we neither had to fight it to make it look like something it's not, and neither used it for the old boring nostalgic flashback look.

Yeah, eh? Super 8 is ~tops~ for exploring the "life of the mind".

OK, I ordered the international PAL version. Euro 12,30 is very affordable. Now see what the delivery time to Europe is.

Thanks Andre & co...

You'll be pleased to know Andre, that I'm off to the post office now, having fulfilled the three orders placed since this original post. I'd love to read your responses to the film... please pop back to this thread and share your thoughts!

To matthias & matt... you're on the money about matching the film/concept to the medium... we certianly didn't want the ultrasharp HD look that's prevalent in doco these days. Since two of the women lost their sight slowly over a long period of time, we wanted to capture a look of imprecision and decay... hell, we even hand developed a roll of TriX in a 35mm deep tank (with diafine chemistry) dropped it on the floor, then telecine'd, dust n' all. The aesthetic certianly matches the subject matter. :D

Post by dagman »

For those who have ordered the film recently, i've been told that (despite getting your copies in to the post office today) the will not be processed until Tuesday. For those o/s, that means 7-10 working days as of then. Thanks for your patience! :)

Hi Dan

I ordered a copy recently, and have watched it. I thought it was really good, particularly the visuals; your way of shooting super 8 is really inspiring. Great to hear that others around the world are appreciating that approach to documentary, and aesthetic, as it's something I'd like to get into one day.

PS is it screening at any of the Adelaide film festivals coming up?

hooray for happy customers

Post by dagman »

I'm very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the film, sonickel... and am flattered that you found it inspiring. Yes, to our delight, the film has been selected to screen at Adelaide International Film Festival, and will appear beside a film called 'What Remains' about an American photographer's life and work. It should be a nice coupling for those with an artistic tilt. :) We've announced the screening on our website, and the AIFF will follow suit in the next week or two, so I'm told. We're expecting a few more festival announcements in the coming ten days so stay tuned! 8)

Hey, did you make a print/blowup? How's it screened?

Can I buy a DVD offline? I have no online purchase accounts, because I am a ridiculous old chicken man. Plus then I'd need a firewall and shit...

betacamSP = screeners

Post by dagman »

We telecine'd DIY straight to DV to edit (no cutting and splicing i'm afraid), then dubbed it onto BetacamSP... that's how we screen... although some festivals have requested other video formats. You can most certainly buy a copy offline... I'll drop you an email and we'll work it out. Thanks for your interest! :)
