are there any quiet 24fps silent cameras
Here is a question for everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows of a quiet 24fps silent super8 camera. I don't want to shoot with sound cameras for a couple of reasons.
1 They seems to eat up batteries pretty quick
2 They usually have Lens too big to attach standard Anamorphic adapters (besides the Isco 45a that is a bit out of my price range)
I have 3 Cameras that all shoot at 18fps: the Gaf 805SS sound(made by Chinon, the one with the big lens 7.5mm ~ 60mm), an Emdeko ZL-7200 (with faux wood paneling) and an automatic exposure Bell & Howell Director series XL, none of which are suitable for sych sound recording. I would prefer to get a silent 24fps that is quiet, buy a barney and get the crystal mod from TFG. If not, maybe a smaller sound camera with the same configuration.
Are my only options for quiet cameras nizo 6080's, beaulieus, and the nicer Canons and Bauers? I like the specs on the nizo professional & 801 but I hear it is too loud.
any suggestions?

No, your only option is the Nizo 6080, and also the 4080!teadub wrote: Are my only options for quiet cameras nizo 6080's, beaulieus, and the nicer Canons and Bauers?

They have better spec than the Nizo 801 Macro and do not eat batteries - they use 6x rechargeable NiMh AA batteries, which last about 10 rolls of film by my estimation, before they need recharging.
I researched this subject a lot, trying to achieve exactly what you are - bought several cameras including a lovely (but noisy) 1014xls before I concluded what many who have tried have concluded - Nizo 6080, TFG Crystal and CUP barney is the best combo for double system sound. You can get a Zeiss A-lens for 67mm lenses if you're minted, or lose the longer end of the zoom with a smaller, cheaper one. Cameras with smaller diameter lenses tend to have shorter zooms anyway, so you won't lose anything. Take my advice - you won't regret it.

Alternatively - get a Beaulieu or 1014xls - both beautiful cameras, and make a really substantial blimp housing, with a hard shell, glass at front and back, soundproofing fabric walls etc.
I used to have a "Uniblimp", manufactured here in the UK in the 60's, which silenced, and I mean silenced any camera - it was a box, made of hardboard, lined with thick felt, perspex screen front and back and a tripod base. The problem was, being universal, it was too long for my cameras and it was hard to see in the viewfinder. Also, the only control was the trigger by a release cable - but it is a good system and worth thinking about - I would build or commission one - if someone made one of these for the Beaulieu 4008, it would sell like hotcakes.

10 rolls is fantastic, I have no problem with that amount of power.they use 6x rechargeable NiMh AA batteries, which last about 10 rolls of film by my estimation
That's what I figured, although a friend of mine in Arizona has a nicer Bauer that is pretty quiet (can't remember the model). How loud are those Nizos Lucas? With and without the barney. And my last question, are the 6080 and 4080 the same as far as noise is conserned? No, your only option is the Nizo 6080, and also the 4080!

My purring Nizo 4080 and yes.... this camera is so silent you cannot hear any camera noise when recording. Especially with an extension on the microphone. Most people assume they have to record with the Nizo mike mounted to the camera body. Like alot of things in life, it just ain't true. I experimented and chopped open another "guinea pig" 4080 mike and after 3 hours I actually spliced 12 feet of extra cable. It took so long because the internal wiring feels like thread. Thus I created an extension boom mike if you will. It works perfect and even looks more professional. No need for a blimp...what for? 12 feet between mike and the 4080....done deal......I cant hear @*)$&!! as far as the good ol' Nizo.....................is concerned.
You could also go for one of the simpler Nizo Sound cameras. I would recommend the Nizo 2056. The body size might be about the same as the 4080/6080 but the lens is much more compact and the camera is lighter overall. I find that it is just as quiet as the 4080/6080. Its lens is more than adequate at 7-56mm. Filter size should be 52mm but I'm not 100% sure. Other than that, I don't think you'll find a silent camera that even comes close to the Nizo Sound models.

If you are interested in crystal sync on the long run, also make sure you get one of the models that can be modified:teadub wrote:Here is a question for everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows of a quiet 24fps silent super8 camera. I don't want to shoot with sound cameras for a couple of reasons.

Nizo 6080, the one I have, is very quiet and have not given me problems.

Need for crystal synch
I received an email from Martin Baumgarten. He said that newer cameras made in the early eighties have electronics that are accurate enough over 50' that they really don't need the $500US upgrade. Since you will probably working in a digital post environment, you can set your synch points at the beginning and end of your audio and film clips, and the software will adjust the audio to synch with very good results.
