Super 8 Kodak Vision stocks in Australia

Post by Blin »

Does anybody know if Kodak plans to start selling these in Australia any time soon?

Yes and no. The have no intention to keep them in stock, but are now prepared to order them in for you, which takes a few weeks and I think you need to get 20 (minimum or in lots of, I'm not sure). Trouble is no one can process it here.

Processing Super-8 film in an ECN-2 machine can be done on most 16mm "tendency drive" machines (that don't use sprockets to move the film through the machine). But great care is needed to maintain lower tensions to avoid a film break, and to avoid twists with the very narrow 8mm width of film. You also need the proper equipment to unspool the film from the cartridge and to prepare (splice) the film for processing.

Probably not a good business case to do it unless volumes are sufficient. Potential customers need to approach their local lab with a good business case to convince the lab the effort is worth it:

Film Plus in Victoria used to develop super 8 Vision 200T with their 16mm processing machine but not anymore - for whatever reason. Perhaps it wasn't viable.

Yes, then they took their colour machine to the tip! Now they only do BW reversal. I process 64t on a semi-commercial basis. What is possible now is shooting DS8 colour neg from Kahl film. They have a 250asa fuji (I believe its fuji) stock available. This can be processed by any ecn2 lab in Aus. There is also a transfer facility in Syd that can do Colour Neg Super8 on a Rank 4, Video-8mm. Kahl film say they charge 50Euro postage to Aus for any order quantity. That is a lot, but would make sense with a large order. If anyone wants to get some, let me know, as I would like some and a group order would be cheaper.
John is correct of course, while many labs here I believe could process super8, none will.

i just went through the numbers and figured it is about the same cost as getting the super8 neg and getting it processed (if you can find a way to get it processed in oz). best to consider ds8 instead by the looks of it.

Old thread but relevant to me.

I'm organising a Super8 shoot in Australia - using Vision3 200/500 (amongst others). Now I just spoke to Kodak Australia today and they are chasing up a bulk order (presumably from the States) as there isn't any stock of such in Australia. Apparently I'm their first customer for the stock here.

Before they realised I was after Vision3 stock they referred me to Richard @ Nanolabs (hi Richard).

Anyway I can't seem to find anywhere in Oz that does ECN2 processing of the stock. Unless someone knows otherwise.

Otherwise I'm wondering if anyone knows a Canadian processing place as I'll be getting my digital transfers done in Canada (in Toronto) - and turnaround times might be faster if the processing place can send my processed rolls directly to the digital transfer place.

http://motion.kodak.com/US/en/motion/Su ... /index.htm lists "DVD Infinity" as a lab that can process Super8-negative... However http://dvdinfinity.com.au/ reads like they can only do E6 and B&W-reversal?!

Yes I found their site as well but no mention of ECN2 processing.

Anyway - have tracked down a Toronto based lab that does S8 ECN2, which will be convenient as I'm having my digital transfers done in Toronto as well.

G'day Carl,
yes, there are no labs in aus that are willing to process ecnII in super 8. Indeed we are the only lab down here that processes anything in super 8. There are a few places that re-sell our processing, but they are of course limited to what we process. Kodak do get frequent requests to stock the vision stocks in super 8(just depends who you talk to there), however they aren't prepared to if no one is processing it. Many people have enquired with them about the pricing of them getting it in. It usually turns out quite expensive to get it from them. I suggest buying it from the usa directly.
cheers,
richard

Hi Richard,
thanks for that. Haven't heard back from Kodak Oz as yet, and as you say, it may turn out more expensive. Have got a per cart overseas price, 20AUS, which is entirely reasonable.

Damn. I didn't think about that. My Super8 camera is a PAL camera - runs at 25fps. The NTSC Super8 film will probably jam. I might need to modify the camera.
ahem
sorry......

I just realised you're from Sunny Queensland. Beautiful one day, perfect the next. Where abouts? My relatives are up there - my brothers backhoe is floating in the Pacific somewhere. Fortunately he isn't. Hope all is well with you.
