The K40 S8 Sound Cartridge Re-Surrection!?

Post by S8 Booster »

Based on the info given from Kodak on Rogers "happening" with them not all S8 shooters in the world can encourage Kodak to manufacture S8S film.

There is possibly another option but there are about 2 IFs! and in these contexts this may be 2 too many. Usually 1 is too many.

However:
Wittner Kinotechnik in Germany has apparently soundstriped K25 which is supplied on 60m reels for the Beaulieu 60m mags. Possibly they also soundstriped the K40 for the same purpose earlier but I am not sure of this.

What could have been a solution:

• Kodak supplies big batches of K40 to Wittner who adds the Agfa or
. ORWO soundstripes.
• Kodak manufactures the 15m (or even 60m cart) sound cartridge housings.
• Both products are shipped to Kodak France for assembly.

In my dreams. Believe it could be done.

I doubt Kodak have the ability to manufacture the carts any more.

Otherwise I'd expcet Kodak would have thought about this already.

Hell, I'd pay £20 or more per cartridge for sound film.

sound film

Post by dave »

I've been investigating the availability of sound film production for a long time. The following is to the best of my knowledge is the bottom line:

I NEED (ANUALLY) ABOUT 250,000 FT OF SOUND STRIPED FILM(K40)
I NEED 2 MODIFIED BEALIEU CAMERAS WHICH WILL TAKE THE
200 FT RITTER MAGAZINE
I NEED 2 RITTER MAGAZINES
NOBODY I.E. KODAK WILL SUPPLY K40 IN AN UNEXPOSED FORMAT IN A LARGE QUANTITY OR FOR THAT MATTER ANY QUANTITY ALTHOUGH KODAK MAKES SUPER 8 K40 FOR THEIR SUPER8 SILENT CARTRIDGE. ISN'T THAT AMAZING!!!
WITTNER IS WILLING TO SUPPLY K40 ON THE 200 FT SPOOLS FOR THE RITTER MAGAZINE BUT ONLY AFTER THEY SELL THE BALANCEOF THEIR K25 DISCONTINUED STOCK. FIGURE THAT ONE OUT?????
WHO OWNS THE SUPER 8 200 FT MAGAZINES IN THE REAL WORLD?ARE THE USING THE K25 STOCK ? I REALLY CANT BELIEVE THEY ARE.
THERE IS 1 INDIVIDUAL IN THE U.S. WHO OWNS A BEAULIEU 7008 AND A RITTER MAGAZINE BUT THE 7008 WILL NOT NOT RUN FILM THROUGH IT UNLESS ITS MODIFIED TO ACCEPT THE MAGAZINE
AMAZING HUH?
SO WHATS THE BOTTOM BOTTOM LINE? I'M STILL TRYING TO GET RAW K40 IN LARGE QANTITIES FROM KODAK . THEY WON'T SELL IT.
IF I GET IT I CAN HAVE IT STRIPED AND AND PUT ON THE DAYLITE SPOOLS FOR USE IN THE WITTNER MAGAZINES
WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE WILL BRING?
PS I CANT USE K25 BECAUSE I'M SHOOTING INDOORS WITH 2000 WATTS OF LIGHTING 3200K
ANY COMMENTS?

Dave,

How will your project benefit from super8 mag. sound? Are you considering shooting crystal sync and using a mindisc or DAT?

i'm shooting single system only . it works!!
dave
ps where are you located?

Yes, Single system does work and I wish sound film was readily available. But if I planned on shooting 250,000 ft of film per year indoors with lighting, I would consider alternatives to purchasing 2 Beaulieu/Ritter Systems and sound stripe kodachrome.

love to hear your suggestions
remember
the final product must be a film that has sound and can be shown on a sound projector

So you have to project the finished movie on a film projector? You could always shoot double system (crystal sync or pilotone), get your film striped after development then transfer the audio to the film. You can also sync a tape deck to a projector. How are you going to edit your movie?
Get hold of Lenny Lipton's Super8 Filmmaking book. There's a whole chapter on sound filmmaking. Very informative.

Kodak sells Regular 8mm film in huge rolls, I can't believe they don't also sell S8 that way.
Keep trying. Talk to someone else at Kodak. They often give conflicting information.

I bought about 70 rolls of fresh K40 mag striped film on eBay 3 years ago when I realized like rare vinyl records... it would eventually be collectible and hard to find. Be pro active.

Yeah but there are still plenty of companies making vinyl records, and plenty of people buying them.....

And I am seriously into both vinyl and super 8...I can count 80% of my music collection on vinyl including new releases...

Oh that and old reel to reel tape recorders, old still cameras and such...just call me "retro man" LOL...

The wife, however, calls it "junk".
