Traffic

Post by Sonic Truth »

I just saw the film "traffic" on sky TV, which is a brilliant film.
Are the mexico scenes shot on 16mm??, sometimes it looks even a little like super 8.

i love the handheld camerawork on this movie.

In the credits it mentions Ektachrome reversal.

As far as I know the Mexican scenes in Traffic were shot on 35mm with amber filters and skip bleach handling during the development. I've seen "behind the scenes footage" and Soderbergh was holding a 35mm (himself, not a camera operator)

if you want to see Ekta in a recent film, check out Alejandro Inarritu's [sic?] short film for BMW Short film series [first season] called "Poweder Keg" with Stellan Skarsgard and Clive Owen. The entire short was shot in Ekta by Bob Richardson DP. Well done.

Traffic was shot in 35mm, bleach bypass and with digital color correction.

well, i didnt know that soderburgh shoots it himself! thats great, its what I would do if i directed a film...after all we all love cameras and using them.

Its a shame it wasnt really 16mm or super 8 cos that would have been cool, but still well done to him for being creative with the look of his film.

does the super 8 ekta film look good, ive only just started in super 8, and want to check out all the possibilities. Ive heard that some people dont rate ektachrome film, too grainy and stuff.

i like grain.

listen to somebody who's done it plenty of times: no you wouldn't, or shouldn't. :-) i do encourage all directors to operate the camera once in a while, but taking care of the lighting as well as being in charge of the camera crew while trying to direct at the same time is a nightmare. the reason soderbergh pulls it off is that he's got a huge staff of qualified assistants and that his lighting and shooting style is pretty simplistic.

No, i would do it myself, mainly, cos I like shooting stuff in a simple way,
and secondly I dont want to ever direct a feature film.

I work in the Tv industry, usually live stuff, concerts etc.....but my own projects like music vids for my friends bands, an films ive worked on with my brother for his college projects , are always shot simply, handheld with no extra camera crew. Now i have a super 8 camera, i will try and shoot on film in future for this stuff. I will always try and come up with concepts that are simple and dont require hundreds of crew, simply because i want to keep my simple rough handheld style.

I think if i started inventing ideas for films and videos that were extremely complicated that rewuired more crew and someone else doing the camera, then i would lose my style. But then what Do i know??
I havnt even started college yet...!!! but i hope i get the chance to lots of filming on my course!!! bye bye. lots of love.
