Dear fellow filmmakers,
I know this is mainly a Super-8 forum (and that is the gauge I use 90%) but also have a Beaulieu R16 since the age of 16.
I resurrected the cam two weeks ago, built a new battery pack and everything looks okay, but:
- though the cam runs fine and also the aperture motor works, I don´t trust the display indicating the film speed (fps). I turn the film speed control knob until I reach the 25fps mark on the tachometer, but the control knob indicates only a mark between 16fps and 25fps. Of course I changed the switch from 2-64fps to 24/25 fps. How do I know that the cam is really running at 25fps?
- I bought a 200feet (60m) mag through eBay and the seller said that he tested the motor on the mag. I tried the same, but failed.
I checked the electricity with my voltmeter at the pressure contacts on top of the camera and it read 1.8 V. Is that correct? Or ist there another way to test the windup motor?
Maybe some of you are also using the R16 and can give me some advice. Does somebody also know what a general overhaul (lubricating & testing) for this model costs?
Thanks for your help and greetings from Vienna...

Hi, have your R16 serviced, look thru these back pages for
Bjorn Andersson,or look in the membership list, he is a Beaulieu service agent in Sweden. I have recently recieved my 4008zm4 back from him,he carried out a service to the camera,it now runs superbly well.I am now awaiting my R16 to come back from a service, cost for a service will depend on any parts used, mine was £118.00 for the R16,which I consider to be a real bargin. So i can highly recommend him for servicing your R16

On the tachymeter you have one small green and one red little dot a bit higher than the marks for 8, 16, 24/25, 32, 48 and 64 f/sec. The lower scale is for 2-65 f/sec settings. When you change the swich to 24/25, you will find you have to turn the speed knob more to see a change of speed, you can now adjust more accurate. On a new or good serviced camera, this marks should show the right speed.
The power to the 60m mag is the same as for the main motor. If you adjust the speed knob you will see a change in volt reading. The voltage you read from your camera shall run the mag.
A normal price for a overhaul is around €300 + eventual spares and postages + Vat. The price is depending on which of the R16 you have.

Bjorn,
Have you ever converted an R16 to DS8? I used to own a Bolex Rex4 DS8....nice set-up but the most practical cam for my purposes. The viewfinder was dark and small....even after I got the ground glass laser brightening. Also, The C-mount isn't a true C-mount since you need RX lenses for the short focal lengths.

Dear fellow filmmakers,
many thanks for the response I got to my questions and your valuable help. It´s great to know that there are others out there with lots of knowledge....
Based on the behavior of my camera and the sounds she gives from her I think it´s best to get her serviced soon. Björn, let me collect some money first and then contact you!
Meanwhile greetings to you all... and keep up "feeding" this forum and spreading the news about Super-8!
