Ok, I'm making a short film for a 16mm class and I was wondering how to do superimpose scrolling credits the old way? Basically I want the credits to start rolling when the character walks away from some graves and then fades to black while the credits are still rolling. Any insight would be helpful.

you mean in camera? shoot the scene, fade out to black in camera using the variable shutter or iris, rewind, shoot the rolling white titles on black. done. the problem will be that it's hard to get enough contrast in the titles to make the black invisible and still have the titles burn in. try two bracketed versions, one where the black doesn't show but the titles might be a little transparent, and one where they burn in properly but with a possible loss of contrast in the blacks, and see which you like the best.

I used to shoot titles old school when I worked for a lab back in the 70's.We usually had them done at an artwork house, they were either Kodalith tranparencies that we backlit, or white letters on a black matte artboard.Scrolling letters were put on a board and moved upward on the title stand by a crank and wormgear set up.We used a Mitchell camera.
They were shot on High Contrast Positive black and white film which could either be processed negative or reversal.Sometimes we did typeset black letters on white board and processed the film negative.
They were then cut into the A and B rolls opposite the picture roll they were to be burned into.
At least that's how it worked when the client shot reversal.Neg was a little more tricky. The titles had to be on a backlit Kodalith and shot A wind (reversed). An interpositive was made of the scene the titles were to be burned in on and A and B rolls were cut of the title supered scenes. From that a composite dupe neg was made and cut into the original A and B rolls.
