mattias from the other thread wrote:it's a short made using my experience in music video, where the song is replaced by a phone conversation (heard over the phone) and illustrated by images of people talking on the phone which in themselves don't carry any story, just illustrate what's being said. it's about love and distance. it's a couple separated by an ocean, so they're thousands of kilometers apart as well as several time zones, they are also separated by them being in different phases in life, by the way they look at their relationship and so on.
I like the way you make the kiss dissolve into the blurry lights, and then they're separated. Where do you get this music from?
Good luck with it at the festival.
We'll knock back a few, and talk about life, and what is right
the music was written for the film by my brother martin sandström.
you know your stockholm, huh? but while the film does take place one stop from the gamla stan subway station i'm sort of perplexed that you caught one of the themes from the film, the subway, even though it's not in the trailer or any other clips i've posted. :-)
I have some friends in Stockholm, particularly from the bands Nine and The Je Ne Sais Quoi, maybe you know them as well. Visited a couple of times, maybe it was a vague reminiscence of those cosy streets. More probable is that it's just one of the few sentences that kept repeating in my mind after the visit, together with some stuff i won't mention here ;)
The best thing about Stockholm to me is Hermans. If i fail in the industry i will introduce it in Amsterdam.

Your film looks beautiful. The kiss scene was amazing, and the whole thing has a very polished quality about it. I know you shot it on HDV, what did you think of the format? how did the camera handle, etc.
Can you talk about how this project developed? Did you write it yourself? was the $200 budget just self fronted? Were the actors friends of yours?
I'm interrested because I'm just in the middle of shooting my first short. It's based on a story my girlfriend wrote and I'm shooting it on super8 for about $600 (cnd) all told. I used some actors from the drama department at my university. It was a really amazing learning experience going through the whole development process. It'd be neat to hear your story.
It's a nice kiss and I like the lights, but these kinds of trailers (teasers) always leave me feeling perplexed because I never get a sense of what the film is going to be about. You say it's a "teaser", but for me it feels like half of a trailer and my first response is to shrug it off. This is my raw first reaction to it.
It is clear that it is a romantic love story and it is clear that the guy is sprung on the girl and hoping that she is not involved with someone else. e. g. "am I interupting something?", but thats all we get....
I would like to get some clues about what kinds of dramatic events unfold in the story. When I see this teaser I worry that the love story is just a love story. In other words I think the teaser needs some subtext.
you're probably right. i think "hollywood trailers" with a story are really boring myself, so i just wanted to show off a few nice images as well as "tease" the viewer a little. but i'll consider making a more trialerly trailer when i get back from the fest since you're not the first to point this out. my screening is in two hours. gotta go.
I cant watch the trailer because it requires Quicktime 7 and I cant afford to upgrade to QT7PRO yet.
Also, could you put the full length versions of any of your films in a locked off corner of your website or something like that? I will probably never see any of your films in festival and after that....?
A bit difficult to discuss any of your work with only trailers to watch
the screening went great and the audience loved the film, no pun intended.
*tech warning on* it was the best digital projection i've ever seen, a real "d cinema" dlp system and the contrast and colors were great. not as sharp as i had hope though since the system only has an s-video input for video sources, no component or sdi. real stupid for such a high end system but you're really supposed to use those fancy media hard drives that plug right in. also it didn't support extending the 2.35:1 frame over the entire scope screen, which it does for real d cinema sources, so they showed it letterboxed on a 16:9 screen. note how i write d cinema and not e cinema as before. apparantly it's a new standard... ;-) *tech warning off*
a private area on my site is a great idea that i've been looking into for a while. stay tuned.

Cool. Glad to hear the film was well received at the festival. Thanks for the technical info on the projecting system. I am still in the dark about video projection since I have not done much of it and have never used a broadcast quality format for projection at all.
I'd be happy to offer more feedback if you point me to links.
Congratulations on finishing another short.
Beautiful shots, especially the soft lights superimposed over the kiss silhouette. Nice flare/highlight on the car window on the drive by! You must have waited around for a while for that one. Did I read correctly that you shot on HDCam?
congrats,
matt, I like the fact that you never give up and continue moving forward. While there is little chance of the probability, you're the kind of person that I like to work with on projects.

we had a 10 minute window where the sun was at the correct angle, just rising from behind the skyline and backlighting the scene, which gave us time for three takes. it's supposed to look like early morning but since this is sweden in november it's actually noon. the low sun gives us plenty of magic hour though, from 10 to 4 or so which we took advantage of a lot.
