i think 16 mm can be discussed here since so many issues are exactly the same anyway, much like s8 and r8 are mixed now even though they have little in common beside the width of the film. people should always indicate clearly if a post concerns one format only though. like "help choosing regular 8 camera" or "16mm rank anyone?"

I agree with Mattias.

Well Andreas,
as I can see, probably you´ll must to rename this Site & Forum with something like "Shooting 16/Super 8/8mm and the one that you want"

It seems like people herehave been discussing both 16mm and 8mm formats simultaneously without conflict. Why go to all the bother of setting up another forum?

I agree with the above. I think it's especially good to be able to discuss 16mm with 8mm users. We all have 8mm in common, but 16mm is an obvious concern to some of us, so it should stay right here. The forum name should stay just as it is - everything should stay just as it is :D

I love this forum. I log in every day.

I am all for keeping the 16mm discussion in the same forum, but the name could make some people feel like it would be off topic.....

I actually like the idea of having a seperate 16mm forum on this site because it might concerntrate the subject matter a bit more rather than having it mixed up in the other threads. I realise there's alot of similarities and cross overs but for those more interested in 16mm than Super 8 it would be better to have it clearer and more concerntrated in a seperate forum. I think the advantages of having it on this site is that most of the people who contribute here a repretty low budget do-it-yourself kind of film makers and that is exactly the kind of input that is missing in other 16mm forums that I've come across - they all seem to be contributed to by proffessionals that don't have enough money and don't need to get into the DIY end of it - so I think having that kind of ethos additionally focussed on to 16mm here would be a great thing

Could get kinda crowded after awhile if the two were combined and advertised that way. Seems the way it is now, people just ask and post the fact that it pertains to 16mm. Are there other dedicated 16mm sites that are as active as this 8mm forum (or even more active). Would the 16mm site mirror this one if it were separated, or would it simply be another forum under the 8mm.filmshooting.com site?
Shooting 16mm?
16mm.filmshooting.com?
I could vote either way on this, so I'll abstain for now.

I just want to say that Andreas seems pretty altruistic in doing this forum at all. Thanks Andreas.

I think if there were to be a new 16mm forum, it should be within this one, not requiring a new domain name, because a new domain would cost Andreas more, and it would seperate things off. I don't see why not have a seperate forum in this site, thinking about it. It would mean more 16mm posts, as people would feel it is OK to post about 16mm, so I have changed my vote, kind of. How easily my feeble mind is swayed....

Until the number of 16mm posts exceed 8mm posts there should not really be need for a dedicated sixteen.

One of the posters if I remeber correctly uses the nick of Supaatesixteen or something?

Would that be a name Super8/16?

No, stick to the original name.
There are linx even at the Kodak web to this one.
Do not mess with it.

I find the 16mm posts interesting even if I do not use 16.

I myself voted for a seperate 16mm agenda.HOWEVER,the comments listed above are all very valid in their own right.
The thing is that if you see a 16mm posting and use it (at our when-we-can-afford-it level) you will log on to that thread and inwardly digest.
Its as simple as that really, and yes, other 16mm sites really do have their heads stuck up their own arses when it comes to us 'amateurs' pokinhg around!

I think the benefits of having a combined forum are many. Often, people working in 8mm are seeking information that more experienced 16mm shooters possess. Conversely, 8mm users often approach things in a practical way that would never occur to "professional" 16mm users. Also, remember, not everyone that visits this site participates in the discussions. Intermixing the two formats in a (usually) friendly atmosphere can be very informative to the casual reader. Also, I think that having separate forums could lead to a certain "elitist" mentality that I've seen in other forums. Here it's always been about creativity first and format second. Even when we discuss video and newbies complain this is a film forum, it is pretty obvious that the majority sees the mix as being relative to contemporary film production. Granted, we do get people asking the same questions over and over again, but that will never end really, and can be good, as well. By asking the same question again, sometimes new, un-thought-of solutions are offered that aren't covered in a typical FAQ page. Basically, I think the mix of mediums is healthy and invites discussion that leads to better solutions across all fronts. Having separate forums could lead to dead end discussions or assumptions that stifle the growth of film in a world already trigger happy with digital.

My two cents....

I agree Roger and the others who wants to keep conversion simply under one moniker.

Andreas, you'd simply rename this forum for example "General small gauge film forum" or something like that, meaning every r8, s8, 9.5, 16 and super 16 mm questions are wellcome.

For example our Finnish film forum (I'm the main behind that forum) at http://www.digivideo.org is just named as "kaitafilmifoorumi" which means the same as "General small gauge film forum" in English and it covers all small gauge formats and we also discuss about Polarvision and 9.5 mm sometimes without forgetting 35 mm, even it's too expensive for all of us!
Best Regards

Moviestuff: Wise words indeed.By noting that often the same questions roll around,it proves conclusively (to me anyway) that small gauge film users are still well and truly interested in the format. No matter what it ends up on. :)
