TRANSFER HOUSE IN EUROPE

Hello
I would like to have your input for top quality super 8 to DV tranfer houses in Europe. Is The Rank Cintel III the best way to maintain the maximum quality of the film? Is there such a service available in Europe

Plenty. One in most European Capital Cities, Dozens in London, Paris, Berlin etc.

It will cost you an arm and a leg, though. Better to find someone on this forum who will do the transfer for you on a "Workprinter" for less than half the cost, whilst retaining quality. There is one of these in most topic threads of this forum. This will give you very good results to DV.

I live in Athens, and I don't think that there is any such facility. I prefer a transfer house in Europe, because of the taxes outside the EC

sorry to break this to you, but it's actually the other way around. the eu laws state that you have to pay the sales tax in the country where the money is turned over (around 20% in most countries), while if you have it done in the u.s. for example they won't add tax if you're from out of state. perhaps you're talking about import taxes and duty? that shouldn't apply in this case, but i'm not a tax lawyer... ;-)

I am not refering to V.A.T. But if you bye something outside the EC, there are import duties (30%, if I am not wrong).

i know that's the case for a lot of products, but i couldn't imagine they would charge it on a service such as video transfer. i might be wrong though. anybody knows for sure?

Hallo.
Here are in Germany, two firms, which are known for quality transfer
from Super 8 Material. AVP in Munich, and PLS in Hamburg. AVP do it on a Rank Cintel , PLS on Bosch FDL, as i know. There are also 2-3 other firms
who have the transfer facilities in broadcast quality.

Again, no, the Rank MKIII is not the best way to maintain best quality for films since it's a 25 years old beast ... Compared to newer ones like Cintel Ursa Diamond, ITK millenium & Thomson Spirit, it's full of noise, does show every little scratch or dust in it, does not have a good contrast range, ect... But the most important thing to remember is the fact that if you can't garanty yourself that the job was well done ( in being there will the transfer is done ), better give your money to a charity association ( bad exemple, it will anyway be better ).

Hey, why not send the films to me? I do a WorkPrinter transfer and I live in Norway. We're not a member of the EU either! However, taxes/duty do apply when you receive the package in your country unless you can prove to the customs it's not worth anything. Atleast that's how it works here.

Last december I rented a Nizo Pro to a production company here in Spain. They were shooting around sarajevo with my beauty (glups!) and got all the stock (pro8mm) and telecine in london. I've lost contact since new year, but I remember asking where they will have it transfered. They were going for some place in london. Since these guys works in digibeta and at a high quality, I suppose they'll not stop on MK3.

Soho Images, RUSHES at London and BBC transfer are probably their facility, althought I still don't know if they have super8 gate or rented it.

DIEFTINTIS, where are you from ?
The best question to ask on telecine is, how much do you want to pay for that ? Then you'll find very easely a facility. If money was not the problem, I would send you to the nearest Oxberry Scanner facility near from you but you might have to sell your house, wife & children to finish your movie. There's a lot of solution to transfer your movie but there quality depend of want you're willing to pay.

Anybody tried The Transfer Station?. I was told a one light Rank transfer is around 200 EUR (transfer time= running time).

With Super8 wetgate!!!

I used to work in Soho, and pretty much all their telecine shops are damned expensive - they are top machines, but also crazy prices for Super8. (We have a Pro8mm branch there - their prices are even more shocking than the American branch, and they only have a Rank Cintel 3 with Di Vinci colouring.)

In London, I recommend the BBC if you need a top quality (eg. to Digibeta) transfer for a film that is going to make some money back. They are cheaper and have a Super8 gate or two. They are damned good Pros as well - they'll look after you.

If you don't have a sponsored budget, or you aren't going to sell this film for thousands or put it out on general release, or you just want a transfer to miniDV, why not just send it to our forum host, Andreas. He is your man - he is an experienced workprinter user, and it will give you great results. Let's not get silly about this - E300 per hour is just a no brainer for Super8 to miniDV, unless you are connected to a Hollywood studio or you have been declared a nation and minted with your own currency. ;)
