music video i cut

here's a music video i cut. it was shot on standard 16 fuji eterna 500t. arri sr. angenieux zoom. lighting was a 4x4 kino, a 12 bulb ringlight and a 650 watt arri fresnel. diffusion was added optically in telecine by inserting a pro mist in the gate on the diamond, which was a first for me. pretty cool effect.

This looks really great. I'm suprised how grainless and smooth the footage appears.I know its only small web qaulity but the image looks really smooth. Would you say the diffusion hid a lot of grain?

I wonder if this can be done on a rank? I would love to try it out but I would worry about it not being setup properly and getting a soft image if the lab has not tried this before.

Do you have any more detailed info on how using the promist filte was done?

yes i would. the stock is less grainy than the old f-400 but in standard 16 it still shows. we didn't diffuse the image mainly to reduce the grain but i'm happy it took care of that too.

there was a slot in the gate, just under the film path i think, and the operator just inserted what i think was a regular 4x4 pro mist. it sounds likely that any scanner has such a slot. andreas probably knows more.

This Sorensen Mpeg-4 codec is very good for internet use, too.
Maybe it beats WMV... Source was 16mm, of cource.

nah, it's just a diffusion filter. the effect is exactly the same as if you would use it on the camera (except halos appear around dark things rather than bright since it's a negative image) and the slight grain reduction is just a side effect.

It looks great. I like how the lighting looks on the darker complexion. What was your role in this project? Were you involved in shooting or did you just edit it? (and I don't mean "just" edit it, sorry if that sounded bad). Once again, looks great in all aspects. I always look forward to seeing something you've worked on Mattias.

i was going to shoot it, but it didn't work out with my schedule so i was on set for half the day as a gaffer instead, plus i supervised the telecine since the dp we got instead, david grehn, couldn't be there. ;-) another member of our director's collective directed it, anders rune.

for once a music video that doesent look like all the raw film is cut in 20 cm pieces by a scissor, mixed in a dry run washing machine and tape re-spliced onto a reel. hey, i can occationally fix my view for almost 2 secs ;-)

music not for old farts like me but i like the imagery/look.

If you where only getting music that was half as good as your editing and the look, you 'd be in the top ten. Very well done. The style fits the music perfectly - but I do miss some more more weighty content, either in the song or on the visual side.

though i dont see why they had to use film for this?

nothing happened, just a guy wiggling around in foggy
conditions and a dude singing in bad lighting, making him look like king kong lurking in the shadow. The 'family-photo-shoot' backrounds gave me
a sense of dulness and towards the end the family literally appears! woman with child in front of 70s wallpaper, while the music sounds like 80s Milli Vanilli. All in all a weird production and a depressing ordeal.

we don't do that. while it might have sufficed for the client it wouldn't have looked as good and it wouldn't have been as fun for us. i tend to agree that the concept is a little corny, even though i actually like that, but what do you mean by bad lighting? i think it looks pretty great. do you mean it's too dark? that's a common problem with web video and the pc/mac issue. get a mac or turn the brightness up. ;-)

Quite sharp and grainless for Regular16mm.

Anyway, I think I'd've shot that guy dancing like crazy exclusively in (more extreme) slomo.
