I fear I've been had!!

Post by Ultrazero »

I just received my Canon 814XL-S in the mail yesterday. Cosmetically it looks fine. Packaging was good. However, I bought brand new AA batteries for it (Energizer e2 titanium) and nothing's working. It's a doorstop. The battery tester on the camera barely registers them. Anyone know what could be going on? Could it be the type of battery? I tested them in a cd player and they work fine. What can I do? The damn guy I bought it from said it was "first hand, fully functional".

thanks

Did you get it on Ebay? If so, after you test new batteries (if it still doesn't work), email that person and tell them that it isn't working. Some their will accept returns.

I'm looking down into the hand grip now. There really doesn't appear to be any corrosion or leakage. It looks ok in there. There is however a very tiny amount of corrosion on one of the battery cap connectors (the thing you tighten to hold the batteries in there). The battery cap also doesn't fit as snug as I'd like, but I'm pretty sure all the connections are being made.

I will clean off the tiny bit of corrosion on the cap. and go out and buy Duracells right now.

I did get this from eBay, but the auction ended with no winner. I emailed the seller afterwards and offered a price. So.... thinking the worst, he wouldn't have to worry about a bad rating if it comes down to it.

we'll see what happens. He still has the benefit of the doubt.

One way to clean contacts inside if they are hard to reach is to simply use a pencil with a fresh eraser. For really tough cleaning, put the pencil in an electric hand drill. I have an electric drafting eraser for cleaning electrical contacts. Even if it was purchased outside of eBay, some sellers will still refund rather than risk getting turned in for selling outside of eBay. (Just a thought if you find you were really taken.) If you saved your emails, that is helpful.

I suggest that you double check battery polarity once more. It may seem like 1 battery is possibly placed in the wrong direction. I think there are an advice inside the batt compartment.

I'm so depressed.

Nothing happened. New Duracells. Nothing.

What should I do now?

I emailed him and told him about this. Historically he's taken a day to respond. I saved all my emails.

Did you re-check the batt polarity? It is quite complex.
Do you have the manual?

If you do not have a manual you can download it from here:

ftp://ftp.filmshooting.com/pub/scans/ca ... 014xls.zip

1014 & 814 XL-S share the same manual.

I have the manual. What do you mean it's complex?

i've rechecked many times that the batteries are in according to the diagram it gives.

If cleaning doesn't work, I guess basically i'm looking at checking with an external power supply to see if its a complete loss.

The manual says "External Power Jack: Coaxial feed plug fitting on the grip for an external 9v DC supply with Canon Power Pack 9v.

Anyone know the amps on that? 9v DC amps?

The amperage shouldnt be very high, I personally would not plug it into a wallwart(those pesky big block DC adapters you plug into the wall) because they don't tend to be regulated and the actual voltage they put out depends on the load. Sometimes putting out a much higher voltage than stated. I would get a 6 AA battery pack(available from mouser.com or maybe radio shack), and wire it up to the apropriate connector, or for testing purposes you could just get a 9v battery and wire it up(wouldnt last long but should work to test). Chances are your problem is due to dirty or corroded contacts somewhere, if it isnt the battery contacts themselves it could be in the camera. Oh, and make sure you get the polarity right on the connector to the camera.

Before you totally give up and trash the thing, you could send it to me and I may be able to fix it when I have the time, I was able to fix mine(814E), the battery compartment and some of the inside of the camera had almost completely corroded.

The continous power drain for this camera should be in the area of 3-500mA.

Not that the battery installastion is directly complex but you have to be very accurate when installing teh batteries.

Also there are a R // RL knob on the handle that are to be normally set at R. There is a also a minor time delay after the start knob is activated.
Do not be confused by this.

Also control that all cam settings are at "green mode", normally upright position.

NiCad or NiMH batteries are not suitable for being used in the battery compartment but 7 pieces can be used as an external battery pack.
