canon 514 xl-s secret pot switch

Post by fireflame productions »

I heard on this forum that the canon 514 xl-s has a pot switch hidden under the cover between the film door and the frame rate selector. Can anyone post pictures or info about this switch. (I want to prepare for when my camera arrives. :?:

Mike -

If you'd like you could add on our Bauer S715XL page from S8Wiki to the above page on your site:

Check out this PDF:

I've pulled the trim off one of mine. It came off easily, and didn't leave a sticky mess or anything like that. It looks like you have to stick a pin or something in there to adjust the pot- attaching some kind of knob would probably be the best way to go. And I think you'd want to carefully check the exposure reading of an unchanging shot (one of a well-lit medium-grey card or similar surface?) to ensure you are adjusting it by the right amount.

The photos of this dismantled Canon are great . How do you adjust the meter ? Has anybody done it before ? :D

The pot (wherever it is) would have to be controlled by the film cartridge pins, ie. to adjust exposure as a function of which type of film you have inserted, so you could try manipulating those pins to see what is moving as a function of those pins.

In the photo showing the side where the film door opens, and you can see the circuitry, there appears to be a potentiometer (pot) in the circuitry. I'm looking at that square yellow plate towards the top, on which is a circular rail under rotating contacts. I'm only going off the picture so I could be completely wrong.

Now insofar as exposure on the 514 is automatic the pot wouldn't directly control exposure (aperture) as such. It would just control the reference level for what is otherwise the varying levels between the light meter (control) and the aperture (result). But if it's just the reference level you do want to control (as it sounds), then you'll need to disengage the control the film type pins would have over that pot. And then accomodate that control (per film type) yourself.
