Best lab to process Kodak b&w super 8 film

Post by Gon_14 »

Hi,

As a beginer on super 8 I only use kodachrome 40 until now. I want to try the kodak b&w films, but I don't know which lab I should send it for processing.
Could any one help me with this?

Thank you to all.

Perhaps you should consider home processing black & white stock. It's not overly difficult and would probably be much cheaper than sending to a foreign lab.

And the quality would be the same?

What do I need for the home process and how do I do it?

Thank you

Google "Martin Baumgarten" for more info; he's a good source for home motion picture film processing. Also search the forum archives here; several regular posters have home processing labs.

Home processing is fun...and can give professional results. You don't need much equipment or space...but you need time! It can be done with a Russian spiral tank in your bath or kitchen sink and a few chemicals that ought to be easily obtained.

Alternatively in Europe the two labs used by people on this forum are:

Andec Filmtechnik in Berlin http://www.andecfilm.de

Super 8 Lab Netherlands http://www.super8.nl

I can personally recommend Andec, and others here swear by the Dutch lab..I've not dealt with it but have exchanged great emails with Frank who runs Super 8 Netherlands.

There may be a Portugese company that can deal with Andec for you, check the Andec website.

you may also want to give pac-lab (http://www.pac-lab.com) in NYC a try. it may be cheap enough to offset the cost of shipping, and the quality is there.

I've tried a few labs for B&W super 8 processing and cinelab is,
in my experience, the best. I was happy with pac-lab until I tried cinelab. They process and ship the same day and the results are always right on and very clean. If you send your B&W out for processing cinelab is worth a try. I'm not affiliated with them at all, just a satisfied customer. http://www.cinelab.com

In Europe, the best results I've found are from The Widescreen Centre in London.

The Widescreen Centre just send your film to Andec in Berlin.

Haven't had any S8 done at Cinelab but I sent 400' of 16mm Plus-X there. Turnaround was 1 or 2 days, the results are very good, and there were no hidden costs, unlike many labs. Good place to deal with.

How are they in regards to video transfers?

Cinelab with high, high regards. Gotten all my black and white done there, super 8 and 16mm and ya they're fast and really nice people, talked/met with them a few times and great to my school. It's worth it.

The 16mm transfers are apparently done on a Rank - I thought the quality was quite good. Not sure what they do for S8. If they have an S8 gate for the Rank I'll definitely send my Plus-X there at some point.
