Best E64T processing in Toronto?

Post by filmamigo »

Now that West Camera in Toronto has the E64 in stock, I'm going to pick some up and have a go with the new stuff.

Has anyone had experience getting E64 processed in Toronto? Are Exclusive the only game in town? If there are other labs, who's the best? I'd like to get a good lab because I have heard there can be quite a bit of difference from lab to lab with the E64.

A secondary question might be -- who has the best price?

I don't think B&WFF will process this. Maybe only as neg. Exclusive processes this, but I've seen no results. Niagara custom lab might also process this but only as cross-processed neg.

I have some 64t in at Exclusive right now - have yet to see the results (been about a month now). They were planning on using the older VNF chemicals to process 64t at first, as they claim they still see so much of that kind of film coming out of film schools (maybe stockpiled...?), that they're hesitant to switch over to an E6 system. They wanted some time to contact Kodak to discuss this before they did my roll, so I suppose that's what's taking so long.... They mentioned a concern about a pink hue they've been noticing in the base processing this way....

I transferred some stuff they had processed in the VNF chemicals about 2 months ago.

Unacceptable results. Underexposed images turned blueish grey in the blacks and the image was washed out in general.

Unless they've fixed things there I don't know if it is the best option.

I believe they were planning on switching their tanks over to the e-6 chemicals starting in the new year.

Best of my knowledge, their processing machine is not big enough to accomidate the time that it takes to run an e-6 processing, but again, I have not seen recent results so your guess is as good as mine at this point.

I'm in Toronto, contact me about transferring some of their film, I'd like to see if they've made improvements yet.

Oh and DON'T buy your film from WESTCAM! are you crazy? Call Kodak and buy directly from them, why pay the extra surcharge to the middle man? ALWAYS BUY DIRECT FROM KODAK TO GET THE BEST PRICE. If you speak to a rep, they may even give you a few rolls for free. They're very kind about working with filmmakers.

I included Black & White Film Factory because, on Kodak's newly updated lab listing, they are listed as a Super 8 Colour Reversal lab. Might have to give them a call and get it from the horse's mouth. If they do process it, I'll check if it's E6.

Ugh. Sorry to hear about the bad results.

I will get you to transfer it. (OT -- if I provide an external hard drive, can you transfer to 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed quicktime? or are you set up to go to tape only?)

Re: West Camera -- I only picked up one roll to test the stock. A couple of reasons I went to West Camera:

1. I want to support Super 8 being available in a storefront. That's a rarity these days, and on a "cultural destination" street like Queen West I think its good for Super 8 to be in people's faces, reminding them that they could be shooting it.

2. I only wanted one roll and didn't want to pay shipping.

3. I'm impulsive and went and picked it up because I didn't feel like waiting for next day delivery! :o

At West I paid 21.95 for one roll, no shipping. How much is it direct from Kodak and how much is shipping? Any minimum orders?

Not sure about a good lab in Toronto. All I can do is recommend a lab that has produced very reliable, quality results for me. Unfortunately, they are located in LA, CA. Try them if you decide you must ship out of your local area. http://www.spectrafilmandvideo.com
